Just looking round here, there does seem to be quite a lot of ill-feeling floating round at the moment. So who wants to talk about nice stuff? What's happened to you lately that made you feel all warm and gooey inside? (Leave it!)

Ages ago, back in my mentoring days, I befriended a newbie from China. He really struggled with SL at first and found it difficult to make friends. I helped him a bit but he became quite 'clingy'. (Those who've helped new people will know what I mean.) But he really did come across as a nice guy so I persevered.

I directed him towards Chinese groups and relevant sims. But he would often IM me and say he felt lonely here. So I helped him put his profile together and how to use what people put in theirs to make common connections. Also how many people in SL like to be approached. He said he felt like giving up but I encouraged him on.

Anyway, I didn't hear much from him for ages. Until the other day when he IM'd me and asked to meet up. He told me about how much fun he was having in SL, how much he loved scampering around in his puppy AV, how much it had broadened his horizons and how many new friends he'd made. Then he thanked me, said he would never forget what I'd done and that I would always be his English princess. Silly really, but I could have cried.

So what nice thing's happened to you lately?

I got a really nice IM from someone I hadn't talked to in years. She offered me some commercial space for free.

Now I just have to script a multianimation demo changer/vendor, so that part is a drawback.

Years ago a perfectly charming lady (but at the time very new to SL) purchased one of my prefabs and had some small problems with set up and texturing. SO I went to her lot and we got the problem sorted. We ended up chatting for quite awhile. I gave her one of the texture organizers I had made and showed her how to use it ( at the time the commercial ones were VERY expensive).

We continued to chat and she described what she wanted to do in SL. I told her in SL anything is possible if you work at it hard enough and never give up. That SL is a fantastic place of possibilities and the only real limits were those she set herself.

I really didnt think too much about it other than what a great person she was.

Fast forward a couple of years

This wonderful person is now a VERY successful business person in SL and a fairly active member of these forums.

I am just so proud of her hard work and dedication.

Nice stories.

Thanks for share them. :)

I am strongly convinced that those who show a positive attitude in SL tend to collect wonderful moments, lovely experiences and nice surprises. It happens to me almost every day... one way or another...

Yesterday I had one those great experiences. In the morning, I found a "day 0 n00b" trying to walk across a wall with a deformed basic avatar... so lost, so lonely...
I said to myself... "in five minutes, someone is going to quit SL for ever unless some urgent help arrives".
I postponed my plans and I showed that person the basics in SL. How to get a decent avatar, how to get freebies, how to handle inventory, how to add landmarks, how to teleport...
I taught her how to use IM's so we could keep in touch in case she run into problems. Of course, that happened a lot during the day.
Later I showed her my house and my sl gf, who helped her too with some of the "mostly for women's" stuff ( shopping, jewelry, platform shoes... )
This n00b was very enthusiastic and perceptive so she finally got trapped into the SL magic thing. She was online during all the day long.
In the night she was still online when I was going to sleep so I meet with with her to see how things were working.
At this point I didn't know anything about her. We just changed technical information. Teacher > pupil conversations.
I showed her some dancing clubs of different styles (romantic, salsa, disco...) and how to dance and how to behave there. She loved it. Finally we danced and talked and laughed...
I found she was a really interesting person: a competitive professional, with a strong personality, good education, great conversation and a fantastic sense of humor.
I was going to be happy anyway knowing I helped someone to survive day 0 in SL. This was just a nice and unexpected bonus.
I've found another wonderful person in SL to add to my contacts lists.
And she did her work perfectly and she evolved fast and firm in SL!
Best "day 0 n00b" ever!

And that was yesterday, but two days ago I had another great experience and four days ago I got another one...
I am so amazed at my luck! :)

Marzial, a nice thing didn't just "happen" to you: you MADE it happen. In fact, you WERE the "nice thing" for someone else. And that's really cool. :)

Lovely story Kelly, and adorable pic!

Im fairly business orientated and dont tend to do the *warm & gooey* often (apart from with my partner of course!) But I was really touched and warmed by how hard my friends worked on my behalf when i wasnt here to "look after business"..Its my business, and i LOVE it..but seeing how much they all did to ensure it run smoothly while I wasnt around...all their hard won social & playtime used up doing things for me...really really made me feel special and cared for...

SO.I'll say it again..
."thank you very very much "

It's so nice to read these things...I met one guy a few weeks ago who just wanted to dance and meet people...as time went by (we danced on every possible occason) he started getting into relationships, most went bad. Tried to coach and help him as best possible and the other day he finally met the perfect woman for him. He made a point of introducing me to her and now all three of us have become friends.

The other one was a one day old Newbie I encountered in a sex club. He was wandering around, confused, so I taught him to dance using the Intan balls, taught him some other basics (uh, Adult Content there) and things....long story short he is now exploring the "bright" side of SL instead of the seamy side and actually seems like a normal person. He still IM's me regularly with reports on how he's doing.

Oh, and a certain LK will not post this out of modesty, but she encountered a raw noob she met through this forum, took said noob out on her first date (Spike and Lil's wedding, where that certain noob didn't even have a nice dress) and then spent several weeks pounding the life skills into her that enabled her to survive here and enjoy SL.

I'm forever grateful to you, my friend.

Scylla speaks the truth! You often reap what you sow both in rl and sl.

Thats a great story. I like it when you can see people who do good things get something good that happens to them in return.

Really sweet story, Kelly.

The nicest thing that happened to me lately is meeting someone I feel I can connect with on a deep level :D

That would be a really good project to start: Help a noob for a day. We've all been there. I encountered a new resident at my home last night. Unfortunately there was a strong language barrier, the translator wasn't working properly and it was very late for me and I had to sleep.

I think I'll look up my chat log from last night to get her name and IM her to see how she's doing.

I have a lot of great things happen in Sl, or I wouldn't still be here. ;)

But if I had to pick just something recent, it would have to be my venture into Raglan Shire. The tiny avatars were so friendly, and silly - OMG you wouldn't believe how silly they get, the goofiness made me laugh till I cried! And generous... wow. I was given cute avatars and other tiny stuff. They made me feel really welcome, which is the best gift of all.

I know the whole Cthulhu thing with me is usually taken as sort of a running gag, but it really started with how I finally became "integrated" into SL as a whole after I decided to be a child avatar.

After I was kitted out right and all that, I was hanging around a few kid sims and talking with some of the others, and became aware of a certain seige mentality there. It was two-ish years ago and at the time, a whole lot of kid avs were thoroughly convinced that venturing anywhere beyond the protection of a kid-themed sim was practically an invitation to be griefed, harassed, and AR'd. A lot of kids avs I know to this very day rarely, if ever, can be found outside a kid sim.

Anyway, when I heard about how beseiged and hated kid avs were, I thought two things: 1) it's totally wrong, and 2) in fact, I don't think it's even true. So I broke free from the bounds of kid-society and ventured back to my noob stomping grounds on the adult grid to set about proving my suspicions and disproving the rumors. Of course I was not far removed from said noobhood, and didn't have a whole lot of places to go. So I started searching - searched for various things that interested me, etc. Found a place called "The Shrine of Cthulhu" and went there to look around. It was a wonderful place - a large area consisting of different "exhibits", with each exhibiting being a still-life facsimile of a scene from an HP Lovecraft story. Each exhibit had a neat notecard kiosk that explained a little bit about the story in question. It was a seriously cool place, and I hung around there for a couple of days - but I was shy; whenever another green dot showed up on the minimap, I'd run away.

Well one day, I decided not to run away. I met a woman who, along with her partner, ran the Shrine, and after talking a bit she invited me to a party later that very night - which I went to, of course. All adults, but all of them accepted me just fine despite my...diminutivity. It was a neat "club" of sorts in the clouds above the Shrine, with a giant Cthulhu statue, and we listened to heavy metal (which I'm generally not a fan of, although I admit they got me fond of Manowar). But it was fun and I proved my point, I felt, about how kid avs are not as discriminated against as many seemed to think. I spent most of my time at the Shrine from then on and was eventually molded into what I am today, as well as encouraged to go out and meet other adult-avs and join traditionally non-kid-centric groups, such as the Cartel.

Sadly, the Shrine is no longer around in SL - but I've always told myself that in time, if I ever have the money to spend, it will be around again.
