hello,

I recently was talking to a 'friend' who told me he was not logged on to SL, but was talking via a chat program.

Anybody know how to do this ?

Thanks

Several different solutions:

First, you can have your IM's sent to an email address. Replying to these sends an IM in world to the original sender.

Or you can use one of these two programs:

Be very careful though when using third party apps that require your SL username and password as not all are good, research things before using them as if they are malicious and you lose all your L$ or worse you will only have yourself to blame.

That being said I am sure there are good programs available, just be careful I would advise :)

SLeek is an old text only SL chat program that is no longer officially distributed or supported you can get a copy of it here

http://code.google.com/p/sleek/downloads/list

You will also have to have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 installed to run SLeek, which is a free download from Microsoft.

You can also try googling Ajaxlife. It's a web-based chat-only client, but the URL changes constantly, and it's often down. But you should probably try it first, because you don't have to install anything.

For me this works only about 20% of the time. Most of the time I get the email returned to me as undeliverable. Not really sure what the deal is with that....

Are you replying within a day, or maybe two? The return address does have a short expiration time on it.

Oh maybe that is the problem. I'm not sure... hmmm. I think I have tried replying as soon as I got them and they did not go through. Now that you mentioned the time thing I will keep track of it.

SL also has it's own version of an instant messanger called SLim

they never did do much more with it though, I know some ppl on my friends list use it as I do see them from time to time

but that (If I recall) was only for conversing with your friends list not to go in world in general chat and such)

it also allows for voice calls too...

search the kb for SLim that should bring up something

(did his icon beside his name on your friends list have a little box instead of the usual bust cutout thing, not sure what that is called, the head and shoulders thing)

If it was a boxish icon, then it would be SLim, if not, then ask him what he uses :)
