Question about "currently online" on your profile

I have noticed that when you look at someone's profile it says "currently online" to the right of their name, and also down the bottom you are able to click on "Offer Teleport". Of course if they are offline at the time it dosen't show and you are unable to click on "Offer Teleport". Thats all very logical, but what I have noticed is that sometimes when someone IS online and you KNOW that they are online sometimes it doesn't show that they are and you cannot click on teleport, unless they are in your friends list.

So what I was wanting to know is how can I change it on my profile so that I appear offline to everyone except for those in my friends list???

In your Preference settings (CTRL-P) under the Communications tab is a checkbox that only allows your friends and groups to see if you are online.

ETA: I believe this also disables the "teleport" button for anyone not on your friends list.

Unless they have View Admin Options - then they always get the Teleport option.

if you do a search>people>name for someone with the bottom tab, doesn't that show if they are on-line anyway, thereby bypassing the friends and groups only view?

It does? People show up in search whether or not they are online, actually.

I think unchecking the 'only allow friends list to see I am online' will solve the problem but I'm not sure.

You can send someone a TP if they are offline and they will, I think, get the option when they log in. Some places do this and some people do this to unscrupulously (imo) advertise their own place while someone was shopping at a mall elsewhere. Or in a club. They send the TP out later sort of like some send out group invites/spam later, from names seen. The person might've logged (out) already, but will get it later.

Or if you were having a get-together, conceivably you could send everyone a TP although this wouldnt quite be SLetiquette, I'd think (depending on situation). They'd get it when they logged in next. IOW there are a few reasons why the tp button exists even if someone's currently not online.
