I read today that a new virtual world is opening in June that will allow several thousand avatars to attend a concert, http://rock-vacirca.blogspot.com/How can they do it?? When I got more than 20 avis in my Class 5 private island sim, lag became really noticeable, at 30 we were all walking in quicksand, and at 40 it was time to do something faster, like watching paint dry. They have land size capabilities of much, much larger amounts, quoted as '2km by 2km or more' This is a little over 61 times our sim size, and assuming a smooth capacity of 20 people per (SL) sim, this would equate to 1220 people, or a laggy capacity of twice that.
It's a different way of doing things, using some different technologies, and capable of different things.

What I don't understand though is that if you got an island or whatever of 2km x 2km you would not spread a concert hall over all that space, or is it a case of having a concert hall in the middle of a huge land mass, with nothing else on it, and then you could hold a concert with several thousand avatars? Would that work in SL? If someone bought 61 sims, could they place a concert hall in the middle of it, and get several thousand avatars attending? The reason I sold my sim is that I wanted to build a club, but when it was built I had no trouble filling it at first, but the lag got so horrendous when busy that the customers soon left, leaving me out of pocket and quite disillusioned SKM

The issue would be visibility... even with draw distance at maximum, that would only be 2 sims. If you upped your draw distance farther via the Debug Settings, this would cause so much rezlag that it'd probably kill the lag. I don't know how they're handling it, but it's obviously different than SL. I assume they aren't doing it as X regions per server, but rather using it more as a continuous region where possible.

Private Island purchase from LL? How many people were there at one time when the lag hit?

From: Ralektra Breda lol what about this post cries advertisment to me I don't think Blue Mars needs to make cutesy alts to advertise There's been a lot of noise about this world in the blogosphere and even traditional media. It is not so much a game, as a virtual world platform on which professional developers can build their own worlds. http://view.scicentr.org/docs/abs_tech_BlueMars.pdfRock has been posting in these forums for a long time - started a thread just last week - and has made no secret of his interest in other platforms. *shrugs* .

:0 dunno anything about this, but had thought (since last year seeing in a magazine an advert for a high-mountain town main street - showing what looked like a fun, quaint but compact 'bar/club row' to visit) that sl sims reeeeally don't currently support such avatar density. i wondered then if there was the possibility to get a sim, 1/4(/16) the size, but with the same resources?? (just to increase 'density' of prims and avatars in an area... could it be possible to tweak just a few variables in the sim host and achieve the effect?) of course i imagine the current response would be 'not currently', but gosh it'd be a neat thing to add for any kind of 'high-density' purpose like this. perhaps in special-purpose/test-density areas... (but wouldn't want really to make a 'test area' a potentially highly-populated event... wouldn't be good publicity.)

I have a world that will allow ten trillion gazillion avatars at once. All dancing with attachments and all that sort of thing.
It's coming in June*.

It is not so much a game, as a virtual world platform on which professional developers can build their own worlds. And there in lies it's problem. The emphasis is in "professional" developers and it's definition of "professional". Blue Mars has ignored mine and everyone I know requests to get in the beta test for devs. Looks like they are accepting requests from companies only. So some might check it out but there is no way I am going if all I can do is buy someone else's stuff. Has anyone in SL received an invite yet?

From: Ordinal Malaprop Does one receive a free bridge with each order? Guess it would also depend if it was of "Sunshine Skyway" or "Galloping Gerty" quality.

Yes. I applied on the same day that their updated website went live, and informed several of my friends who were also keen to get in and have a look. We all received our invites about 4 days ago. The email replies were not identical, so I doubt that it was an automated response, it does look like someone is actually going through all of the applications. If you applied, I would say hang in there for a while yet, the Easter break will have slowed things down a little too, but with only a total staff of 24 at present I can well imagine that this is being handled by only 1 or 2 persons. Blue Mars (if it takes off) could well be a direct competitor to SL, despite what they say to the contrary. I would respectfully suggest that discussions of the merits/demerits of competitors to SL be discussed off these forums, on SLU for example. Rock Vacirca

Rock Vacirca Fair enough! If any Lindens come by to "clean up"; While you are here, where is our forum upgrade? Some news, any news?

Has anyone in SL received an invite yet? Getting the creators content license was p!ss easy, i know several SL'ers who obtained it.

From what I understand, Blue Mars is not a persistent world like SL. You can't open up a map and see what's going on in any given place at any given time, and there won't be a ton of redundant textures for the same things by hundreds or thousands of individuals. It still sounds interesting and I may bite at it, since it will allow us greater modeling freedom with mesh imports.
