Inventory Idea

[Before I start: boxing things up might achieve the same cost
reduction as what I'm suggesting below.]

Linden Lab sets up an offline storage database,
let's call it "The Shed".

Users can store stuff there, so that it will
be offline and not in their working, "live" Inventory.

They can copy it back to the active Inventory
if they need it, or store it in the "storage shed".

How does it work:

1. On the Inventory dialog, there will be a tab
that's titled "The Shed" (or whatever). Clicking
on that opens a new dialog that looks just
like the Inventory. So this step is just
like opening two Inventory windows.

2. Once the two windows are open one can drop
TO the Shed Inventory or FROM the Shed Inventory,
from the active Inventory.

And that's it.

Why?

Well if one has > 10,000 items or so, something
as frequent as crossing a SIM will have an extra
cost according to the size of the Inventory. At
least this is my understanding of how "passing off"
SIM-to-SIM works.

If people are like me, they only need a small
part of their Inventory to "operate". Probably
90% of people's Inventory is just stored "precious"
stuff.

Such a storage strategy in content management could
help with the laggage.

Here's a simpler model: right click on the Inventory
item, and there would be a choice titled: Offline.

Something like that.

What do you think?

If that idea would be more secure than storing excess items in world in a storage trunk, I'd go for it.

They were looking for suggestions for added benefits to offer Premium users. This would seem appropriate.

Considering there is a notice proclaiming they have just "found" inventory- do you really want to add additional risk to stuff you lose anyway?

Just 'cause it's 'broke' doesn't mean we can count on it being fixed :p

I don't see how this would work... the stuff in your Shed would still have to link back to you using the UUID. As far as I know, sim crossings don't involve carrying the Inventory; they involve carrying the links.

I must admit to not being keen on this idea, there is just too much to go wrong in an already delicate part of SL. I say leave it be until we can have true offline backup/restore functionality.

That's the first time I've heard that the size of your inventory had an impact on sim crossing time. Where did you get that?

I've *heard* it, but never quite understood why it should be true, if it is. I mean, taking Infrared's suggestion one step further: why not just keep all our inventory in the Shed? If that's not how it works now, why ever not?

If I were LL I would not do it. It would make it even easier for us to collect loads of things, keep doubles etc.

That would most certainly mean more and more database storage space needed. Most of use would certainly use the option to collect to our hearts content;)

We would have even more stuff to go through to find something.
Imagine the time it would take to open your shed, put on your scuba gear, take your torch and fasten your safety line, and then carefully descend in the unknown depths of your inventory items there.
Many of us would surely have a decompression time before even finding the wanted item.

Boxing the items you want to keep but don't need directly available all the time is surely much better.

I don't think inventory size can have any impact on sim crossing.

What I do is log in into my private sandbox, and then make my inventory load by typing something in search.
Then I'll do something else (making coffee or so) until my inventory is loaded

No, I've had items mysteriously vaporise as it is, let alone having it stored somewhere else and have to keep calling for it.

Just box things you don't use often.

Sort the rest.

This is silly. For a start I really doubt there's some benefit to storing inventory in two different places. If there is some benefit it should be easy for them to archive objects that haven't been accessed for a certain amount of time and then retrieve them from storage and place them back in regular inventory if they are accessed.

This would mean that things you access very rarely would be slower to load but things you access regularly would be in top storage.

There's no need for the user to get involved or have any idea that it's going on.

Yes...but maybe you could carry just ONE link...between you and your particular Shed?

I really don't think sim crossings care about anything in your inventory if it's not actually attached to you at the time.
