I have just joined, this is my first post.
I and am looking to rent a small place to learn building. I know I can go to sandboxes and I have been doing that. I was inworld searching for builder's studios, art studios or plain cheap skyboxes where one can build. And I keep coming up empty. There are a lot of cheap rentals and theme rentals out there but not basic structures to call home where you can build a few things -- or, at least I am not finding them via the inworld search... I've read a bunch of threads here, the 5 tips for the newly born is great.
I realize there is a prim limit to any place you'd rent but I am a bit confused about the building permissions of most rentals. I don't want to find myself in a furnished place where I can't build my own furniture and work on clothing and attachments.
If a rental one is visiting has the "no building" icon at the top is that only for non-residents/renters? Or does that imply that if you live there you cannot build your own things in your own space?
I'd like to find a community with other artists/educators/builders.
Thanks for any advice...

I've read a bunch of threads here, the 5 tips for the newly born is great. On your own land, you can build. I got my start in a little skybox sitting over my mommy's home. I actually suggest making your first skybox. It's a good part of learning to build, if ya ask me. Nowadays, I have a big, fancy skybox -- but my old, simple one is still something I take pride in. No build means that no items can be built or rezzed, yes. That said, this typically only applies to non-renters/owners. Mari

Yes, that "no build" icon is almost certainly because you aren't a member of the resident group. (Although there's at least one spot on my land where that icon displays for me...even though I OWN the group, and even though I CAN build there. SL weirdness.)
My favorite place to set up a studio would be a skybox high above a parcel on a private estate. You get maximum prims (most estates rent you bare land) and maximum privacy. Just rez a big platform on your parcel, sit on it, and change its Z value to your desired altitude. Don't forget to set a landmark.
You could rez a little cabin down below, on your parcel. Or you could make your skybox more elaborate, like one I visitied. The entire lower floor was a workroom, with comfy living quarters on the floor above.

thanks for your answers so far. Getting a little bit of land and building my own skybox is exactly what I want to do. Are there any search word hints to use to find a place catering to that? I guess looking at estates and contacting their owners is the next step? Should I just go inworld and wander some more? I keep finding developed communities (many awesome places) But that's not what I'm looking for. Here's another question, do I need to set up a teleporter for a skybox? Or does that depend on how high up it is? Eventually I want to make one that looks like the Flying Dutchman (a ship sailing through the sky) but I'll start out with a simple box for now...

Nope, no need for a teleporter. You can just create a landmark while standing in your skybox and use it to get back there. I would rename the lm something like "My Skybox" to make it easier to find in your inventory. And welcome to SL and the forums!

If you own the land, once you've got up in the sky with the skybox, while you're standing inside it, landmark it by clicking the 'world' tab and then 'create landmark here'. Then you can use the landmark in your inventory to teleport (double-click or right click it to bring up TP option). This shouldn't interfere with any landmark you have set for your land at ground level - they will both work. If I want to build something in the sky from scratch, this is what I do: 1/On the ground I make a platform 10x10 m and put a cube in the middle to sit on. Link these two prims to make a single object. 2/Sit on the cube, right click the object, select 'edit' and then, under the 'objects' tab, emter your chosen height (blue Z co-ordinate). Press enter and the object will instantly rise to the new height with you sitting on it. Stand up - that's why you need the platform, otherwise you fall back to the ground! 3/now you can make stuff on the platform - starting with the skybox floor.

no, i finally outgrew that place. it was great for making shoes, but once i partnered and moved into the furniture market it was way to small. that home/workshop was a modified version of one of vivienne schell's builds.
