IMPORTANT NOTE.. BE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR FIREWALL INSTALLED AND RUNNING B4 U DO THIS.... READ ON...
just wanted to share with you all a personal tip i learned last week. Everytime i logged in i kept crashing, not loading nor being able to go into appearance, symptoms of packet loss (see my thread date 11/14/2007). Try calling your ISP and have them run a test check on your router. Also, tell them you wnat to go into the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), usually used by gamers. THIS WILL HELP YOU, IT DID FOR ME !! So, if you have a router in your home network, and have issues with lag, or as in my case being Ruthed, you should seriously consider calling your ISP and request it (is FREE).

In some cases you can go to your router's web page and select the DMZ option.

If doing this, one should be aware that the DMZ is vulnerable to direct attacks from the internet that are otherwise blocked by the router. Usually the DMZ is for testing an application to determine which port / address ranges need to be unblocked in the router, or for hosting a hardened installation (like a specialized server) that has to be exposed to stuff that should be blocked from other machines on the router. Anyway, a machine inside the DMZ really needs to have some *extreme* security if it's gonna be there for any length of time.
If a regular user application works inside the DMZ, then it should be possible to figure out what it's doing in there, and reconfigure the router to permit just that access (perhaps only to that one machine) outside the DMZ. (Any delay introduced by the router pushing packets around should be nearly identical in the DMZ as elsewhere, and negligible in any case. So, I'm not sure why the DMZ would be "usually used by gamers"--unless gamers are usually superstitious, or have unusually crappy routers.)

I have a properly set up router and have no problems at all with it. I would NEVER use the DMZ for more than a minute, because then I could as well delete my firewall entirely - and even a minute is risky.

Setting your PC's internal IP to a DMZ opens it right up to direct attack from the outside, as others have said before me. NEVER USE IT. On the other hand, a properly configured router will be totally transparent for your SL and other online gaming needs. RTFM, find the protocols and ports that your games use and program your router appropriately. No problems. ;3

Too bad about the dangers of the DMZ. I tend to crash a lot--but not just the application--my cable modem crashes! I have to refresh the modem and the wifi router every time I crash. This has happenned with both cablevision (IO) and with comcast--so I don't think it's necessarily a hardware issue. It has also happenned with 2 different computers. Don't know why it happens, actually.

If not, you might wanna see to the modem first and if so, it might not be the ISP, but the cables/lines running to the home. Have the ISP come out and check for signal strength.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER...did I say this, NEVER put your machine into the DMZ on your router. Doing this will open you machine directly to the internet which would be a very BAD thing. Never do this or you will come to regret it and have to ultimately rebuild your PC. If you are a general user and do not know the ramifications of your actions and don't really know what and why the DMZ exists in your router DO NOT USE IT.

From: Giuli Reino Callilla U R Wrong. U Can Do Dmz If U Have A Firewall In Place!!!!! Duh!! DMZ= NO FIREWALL. It's a setting every firewall has and basically means the firewall IS SWITCHED OFF. So don't try to bee too clever-it's like owning a safe but not locking its door. Having a firewall and actually having it configured properly are two things. And some manners would be nice, too.
