I have some textures I want to sell that are full permissions. Should I be worried about a copy bot? Not really sure what a copy bot does but I want to be safe.

There are numerous utilities which enable folks to grab textures from OpenGL applications and save them locally.. I'm not sure copybot had this ability, but there really is nothing you can do to prevent someone from copying textures if they are motivated enough to do it. Should you be worried about it? No. Worry about it IF you find out down the road that somebody's been stealing them.

Hmmmm, not sure i understand this..... could be me though
You want to sell the textures full permissions? Why worry about a copy bot? If they are full permissions, anyone can sell them on anyway, no need for a copybot.

If you are making them full perms, then it will be open feeding frenzy without a copybot in sight. What that poster was trying to tell you is that we could all sell your items with those permissions. You need to make the textures no transfer.

...which makes them totally useless for building things for resale.

Textures are usually sold full permissions so that they can be used in things that are then going to be sold. The market for textures with limited permissions is likely to be small.

TRU have a notecard that explains exactly on what conditions of reuse their textures are being sold. Might be worth looking at it for ideas.

Ooops, I did mean no transfer :o Damn I need an early night :D

Anyway, the only way to totally protect your textures is to not sell them. you can have a certain amount of protection on the textures is if they are no mod, which makes them useless to buyers

Don't know how many textures you're looking to sell Fallon, but please name your packs descriptively, so they can be found easily if you list them anywhere. The first SL texture vendor who makes it easy to find all their texture packs via text search (on their website or anywhere) gets all my business. I can sometimes, but not always, find Lauren Fox's stuff on SLX that way. But TRU drives me nuts. So much great stuff yet so inaccessible! I have yet to buy anything there because I refuse to stand for hours waiting for stuff to rez.

Professional texture artist here.

You pretty much need to sell textures full perms in SL, or they won't sell at all. Any limitation of the permissions on the textures makes them virtually worthless to the buyer.

Make it no-transfer? Every time you apply that texture to an object, the object SHOUTS to the whole sim!

No Mod? This makes whatever you apply it to no-mod for the next owner.

No Copy? This means you can only apply it to one prim, and then it's gone.

Textures are usually sold with a terms of use agreement that prohibits reselling the raw textures. Will some morons and cheapskates ignore that agreement and consider the open perns an open permission to copy and resell? Yes. Can you file a DMCA claim against them and get LL to force them to remove the illegal copies from SL? Yes.

Is it worth worrying about? Honestly, as an issue it is much like shoplifting in a real life retail store. You can lock things down so tightly in a RL store that no one could possibly shoplift, but the cost of doing so and the inconvenience to your customers would far exceed the cost of locking it down like that. Or you can take reasonable precautions that keep honest people honest, and write off the small losses, and send the feds after the big crooks (DMCA them).

Best course: sell full-perms, give the buyer a terms of use agreement that says they are not legally allowed to resell the raw textures, and in your vendor, display a reduced resolution version of the texture with SAMPLE printed across it as a watermark.

At TRU we are in the process of re-working ALL our texture vendors, so they will display reduced-resolution, watermarked images. This is because or the thieves that use GL Intercept to steal something we sell for a few pennies each.

TRU will be a lot easier to shop at in a couple of months, with a fully searchable HUD system that will cross-index every testure we sell.

CopyBot doesn't affect texture theft, incidentally. It copied prims, not raw, resellable textures.

Currentr permissions can help only so much but mainly are a distraction.

Pictures with full perms can be easily saved locally (File->Save texture as...). Without perms, that option is off.

However, anything on the internet that you can view can be copied by other means than the viewer itself. LL itself can not even prevent that at this time.
