I've been looking at who is passing through 128,128 in my home region (Wainscot) and noticed one particular name pops up every day, without fail: Niv Amat

I'm guessing this is a bot that is checking something in the region, but what. Are they likely to be up to no good? And if so, should I ban them?

Apologies if this is in the wrong place, but no idea where else to put it

How does know for sure just who is a bot and who is not from a name?

they`re ruth or naked
most of them are crawling
some of them rotate at 45 degrees after a partial scan
rare occasion they fly in a circle

trust me, when you see an indexing bot, you`ll recognise it immidiatly ;)

Well with that discription I guess I've never seen an indexing bot.........I've seen bots but they look pretty much like a newbie to me. Some are even well dressed and skinned. :)

nope

but i`d rather have my bits not indexed or have any sort of bot on my land, i see one, i open profile and it gets a perma ban and a kick if they aren`t booted in 5 seconds

What exactly can they be doing? I figured that the most they'd be doing was looking for land for sale.

I don't think LL need bots either; they can gather whatever stats they want from their own servers I'm sure

Bots are good for displaying items for sale. I've seen some really great looking bots in skin stores. Once I was looking at guitars with a friend and there was a nice looking bot "playing" one of guitars that were for sale.

So, yeah, bots have a place in SL.

But, I'm in the minority on that I know. :)

Beyond being bots, honestly they never do much or affect anything. I have 2 or 3 coming and going time to time and they never sit on your furniture or disrupt your chats.

They are honestly not intrusive in my experience, and beyond being bots, with the estimated bot issues, it is hard to even be vexed by them too much.

They gather UUIDs, or look at traffic, or attempt to log popular places, none of which will affect you in any real sense, in my experience since they started using them.

And they don't sit idle at 600 meters and watch me build a prim skirt either............LOL.

I remember one of my neighbours was going to give me some land. He set it for sale for L$0 and a bot popped up and bought it before I even got the "for sale" icon on my screen. My neighbour didn't understand setting land for sale to a particular user only. Fortunately the owner of this bot was honest and gave the land back to the original owner who then set it specifically for me.

Seems a lot pop up immediately when you set any land for sale for L$7sq/m or less.

Different kind of bot though I guess?

mentioned that in the bot thread, if they are used as show casing for sale items, i don`t have an issue that they also get traffic as in this case they are usefulland see befor you buy as some of those items can be more prims then an house

traffic/camping/indexing bots i hate

*grins at Peggy*

yup yup. Is always best to sell to a direct person if you intend to swap. People get furious over it, but it is a function built into SL, a mechanic built in to the menus. If your land is not for sale, this will not be the reason though.

Yea, that.

There are bots named "performancetester" that pop in and out of sims all over the place.

BareRose gives prizes to arrivals at random intervals, and then the prize bot announces it loudly for all to hear. A few days ago I was there (LOVE the place) and one of LL's performance tester bots landed and won an outfit. It made me chuckle. I wonder if she wears it often?

This came as a big surprise to me too. They actually look pretty good.

What annoys me is this sudden rash of faux avatars. They're not accounts but are still bots in a way I guess -- fairly convincing sculpties that look a lot like avatars but with no name hovering over their heads. I had a female one yesterday swoop down on me demanding to be touched (to dispense information). I muted the creepy thing.

A guy in Wainscot keeps rezzing "noobs" that are sculpties that look like new male accounts, but as you say they have nothing floating above their heads and don't talk. Normally they look like they're "away". Hadn't bothered to check if they contain scripts or not though, I must admit

If they're physical I'd shoot them. If not, could be fun to rez a hollow box around them.
