Was just wondering how big the entire Main Grid is now.
Is there a page of statistics somewhere showing how many regions there currently are?
Thanks

Exactly, I don't know. The last blurb I saw mentioned "nearly 30,000"
Huge amounts of testing are ongoing, and have been ongoing for the last few weeks. We certainly hope and believe that this rollout will go more smoothly than 1.23 did. That being said-- as we've said before, there are some things that are near-impossible to really test. Second Life is an environment with 5,000 servers, nearly 30,000 regions, and 60,000 people online. We can't test a new server version under full load without putting it on something of the same scale. We test everything that we can before we roll it out, of course. But, as we've seen in the past, there are a couple of things that tend to zap us. The first is "edge cases", things that happen rarely, and just statistically don't show up until we have the code running on thousands of hosts with tens of thousands of residents using it. The second is load-related things, where a bug in the code overloads central systems. If the bug is subtle enough, it can be missed on smaller installations. All of that being said, quite a number of people in QA have been working tremendously hard over the last couple of weeks finding the bugs, and the devs have been working tremendously hard quashing them. We think things will be good. Fingers crossed. From this thread: /348/38/277337/1.html Rolling Restart to deploy 1.24 the week of 2008/08/18 Post dated 8-19-08 (MDY) _____________________

http://secondlife.com/whatis/economy_stats.php says there are 23098 "islands owned" but I don't know if that includes the mainland - I suspect it doesn't. With Jack saying that the mainland is "nearly 5000" regions, that puts the total close to 30k..

Somewhat related: someone over on SLU asserts that close to half of all private sims are now openspace sims (http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/15308-openspaces-nearly-half-all-estate.html).
Prospero's quoted comment seems to support that as well: in order to fit 28,000ish sims (of which 5,000 are mainland) onto 5,000 servers 46.4% of all private sims need to be an openspace. If you focus only on land mass then it probably doesn't make any difference, but if you focus on sims it's the difference between 28,000 and 20,000 full sim equivalent which is rather significant. |

Thanks Yosef and Meade. I did have a try but couldn't find figures on the labyrinthine support/wiki pages.
![]() Nearly 30,000 regions.. woh, that's a lot more than I'd have guessed. And thanks for the SLU link, Kitty. Interesting to see how popular the openspace sims have already become. Incidentally, does anyone else find the white text, black background rather harsh on the eye over there? Can see various names that I recognise from RA on the threads, but I haven't looked at SLU forums often and now I remember why not. -- Aes |

Lower left corner, I believe, and you can change the theme. _____________________
