Camera Position Problem

I think I might have inadvertently modified my camera position setting and I haven't a clue how to get it back to normal. As a result it’s driving me up the wall, especially when I’m building stuff.

It’s a bit difficult to explain but here goes. Say I’m going to build something, I click ‘build’ and the camera position immediately moves to almost directly overhead looking down on me. So I rez a cube (or any prim), the cube appears but as soon as I click X to remove the build panel the camera position moves back to behind me. If I then right click on the cube and hit ‘edit’ the camera position moves overhead again, cancel ‘edit’ and the camera goes back behind me. Also if I click ‘alt’ and zoom in on an object then adjust that object with ‘edit’, as soon as I cancel ‘edit’ the camera comes out of zoom and returns behind me.

So you can see any building project is hampered by endless changing camera positions and it’s really frustrating. Is there any way of resetting the camera position to a default setting ?

The only thing I think I might have done was when I was using a motorbike HUD I clicked on ‘reset’ at some point and things haven’t been the same since.

I'd really appreciate any advice on how to solve this little problem, and I promise never to click 'reset' again (especially as I don't actually know what it was for).

Thanks in advance, Astrid

Clicking reset should not be the problem .have you tried panning around with your camera controls? or checking disable camera restraints in advanced settings that might help.ctrl-alt-d

I'd try a detach all, in case there's a hidden HUD doing something to the camera.

It might have something to do with the automatic camera movement options in Preferences.

If that doesn't work thy deleting your setting file.

The settings file will have a name similar to settings.xml, and on windows is it in

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings

You might have to pick from several settings files, depending on how many viewers you have installed. The normal SL viewer has a settings file called settings.xml, the Release Candidate has settings_releasecandidate.xml, etc.

You might need to set windows explorer options to let you see hidden folders, in explorer's View option.

Or you might try doing Start Run and entering
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings

and pressing enter.

Ahah yes, got it. I had 'Automatic Edit Camera Movement' checked in Preferences. I unchecked it and the problem vanished, thank goodness now I can get some proper building done without the camera view whizzing all over the place. Thanks Suezanne and Blot for the advice,

Astrid :D

For future visitors to this thread: it is possible to skew the default cam position by enough LlSetCameraParams calls unmatched by llReleaseCamera calls, together with some ungraceful detaches. I've never seen this happen when cam-controlling attachments are used normally, but during debugging I've several times wedged my default cam into a kind of "dog's eye view" position that would only revert by relogging.
