I can log in ok on my tower pc. That pc is physically connected to a cable connection through a Netgear router. The laptop (new) is connected wirelessly through the same router. The wireless cnnection seems fine. I've read some stuff about it all and it's all gobbledigook to me - speak to me like you would if I was 2 years old please! Hmmm, also the frewall thing on my laptop is different.
Suggestions on a postcard please!

First of all, do you get internet connection with the laptop? What sort of message do you get when you try to login? When does the login process stop?

Even if I never have problems to run SL from my laptop with my home wireless network, this is taken from the official SL System Requirements: "Second Life is not compatible with dial-up internet, satellite internet, and some wireless internet services." http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php

The laptop connects to the internet just fine. When I start Second Life it goes all the way to the login window, but only the outline of the window. That window then disappears and the whole thing is gone.
Uh oh, "not compatible with some wireless internet services", I don't like the sound of that, not one bit.

yours is not likely a wireless internet service

its the wireless networking conifguration in the router... i dont know which ports sl uses, nor the setup for your router...but thats whats wrong...used to do upport for M$ games and hardware for a few years and we supported internet multiplayer, and 99 times out of 100, we would have a "connection" issue customer simply unplug their router, and plug the machine directly into the modem as a test, voila' it works...then supply the ports range and let them know to use your router information or call the router support and get help opening those ports.
my own dsl modem has wireless in it, but i have no real routing nor ports shut...so my laptop connects wirelessly just fine...

OK, that almost makes sense. I'll see if I can work with that Ashley!

Damn but this stuff is tricky if you don't know how.
OK, I have got into my router configuration thing - it is a Netgear one - WGR614? - and found port forwarding. Is that what I need? It looks promising withe preset otpions for some games (but not Second Life, of course).
I have found the ports I need to type in but it asks for the server IP address too!
Any further comments appreciated!

if it goes black and shuts down the laptop cant take it. mine did that the gpx card is not good enough or the settings in SL are to high its doing a shut down before you log in.
Wireless and SL dont mix and Laptops and SL dont mix. I use a cooling pad to get it running with everything turned to crap to run it as a basic chat client and see gray on mine.
I didn't have to set my router at all same kinda set up you describe. try pluging it in ..I bet you get the same thing .
As well like wi-fi at panera bread wont let you log either.

This isn't exactly helfpul, but I run SL on a laptop over a wireless network and have very little trouble. So with any luck you'll be able to sort it out. Unless it is the graphics card - can the graphics options in SL be turned right down, the way you can with games? That might be worth a try, at least that should tell you if it's the card or the connection.

Vienne, I'm a little confused by your last post re: ports and servers, etc. Can you physically connect your laptop to the modem with an ethernet or USB cable? (Use ethernet if you can; it 's much more robust.) I would just skip the wireless part altogether right now. I had nightmares with wireless and SL. Laptops are fine with SL; I know several people who run SL on their laptops. Admittedly, they're running Linux systems and not Windows, but that's neither here nor there right now. First we need to get you directly connected; once you do that, it will be easier to configure everything else. Go to: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest to find out how fast your connection is, for downloading and uploading. Tell us the results here.

I would hope it isn't my system. It is an Intel Duo 1.8GHz. 2GB DDR2 SDRAM. NVidia GeForce 8400M GT GPU.
I'm going to keep trying!
As to that thing on SL's site; SL is incompatible with *some* wireless services..... sheesh, can't they be a bit more specific than that?!

OK. I am running Vista on the laptop and I right-clicked SL instead of double-clicked, and selected run as Administrator. Damned thing worked! And it works nice!
Thanks everyone for all input, please post any further thoughts!

oooh you didn't say it was Vista. Since you're running as Administrator, you must have some sort of access to lower level stuff? That's really weird. You still running completely wireless, or are you hard-wired in now?
