The unfortunate reality that we all face is that in the process of rewriting SL code and making the platform more stable there is going to be a lot of broken content.
It WILL happen, so what if you have to change your script or your product line to accomodate changes? RL companies do this all the time or perish.... _____________________

My understanding was that this had been fixed again?

yes it's fixed now. I thought the Linden posting as "Soft Linden" was particularly rude to single out only a few as deserving "thanks" for commenting on the issue. The underlying messages was to tell the rest their input was unwanted. I posted an entry on my blog about this, it really had me P.O.ed.

I anticipate the day there is a major technical advancement in SL that will render much of the current content outdated. LL will have to make a major decision at that time: Go ahead with the update and anger residents or not do it and allow future competition to leave them in the dust.
When that day comes I am certain they will have to go ahead with the update. It's one of the prices or working within a virtual environment. |

heh, lear cale is working on the ferris wheel for me (or at least it was for trying to get mine to work) and it was already still buggy, but wow what a ride that must have been ROFL
need to get in touch with him see how that is coming along weirdness abounds in SL... _____________________

I bet Huns Valen is, right now, either grinding his teeth or doing the scheming hand-rub thing at what Havok 4 can do for or against his aircraft systems...... if he's still inworld.... have not seen or heard from him in ages.
Make or break, what does the future hold... _____________________

Wow! The contempt that the developers (destructors?) demonstrate in that JIRA conversation was beyond arrogant. At least the LL bloggers have the decency not to say "fuck you" to the customers as explicitly.

LL will have to make a major decision at that time: Go ahead with the update and anger residents or not do it and allow future competition to leave them in the dust. When that day comes I am certain they will have to go ahead with the update. It's one of the prices of working within a virtual environment. Linden Lab could choose to invest in legacy support or simply declare it beyond their capacity to care. LL is in a precarious position as they didn't construct any of their content; without customer development, SL would be some terrain, water, and a welcome area. If they scrap legacy support, they will have thrown away their most valuable possession. Unfortunately, I fear LL may be stupid enough to do exactly that. |

LL will have to make a major decision at that time: Go ahead with the update and anger residents or not do it and allow future competition to leave them in the dust. It isn't so much that this will happen but that LL will give advance warning, possibly set up the new advancement on the beta grid first so that people can test, roll it out on some main grid sims before a full roll out etc. Indeed not disimilar to the plans for Havok4! It is somewhat ironic that a patch that LL had been warned in advance would break lots of content should go out without warning, just days before LL blogs about how open and transparent it is about communicating! interesting article, altho linden labs has stated and proven many times they dont care about your biz if it makes SL better in their eyes
which is reason #1 i dont treat SL as anything more than a toy a platform retains its backwards compatibility, a toy just comes out with a new version for you to play with |

It's pretty disconcerting that the developers didn't listen to Strife's repeated warnings that this change would unnecessarily break content. On the other hand, it's kind of reassuring that wiser heads prevailed and they almost immediately "fixed the fix."
As I see it, it's inconvenient that this broke content that was generating revenue for residents (the article's emphasis), but much more disturbing that the developers were so out of touch with basic scripting functionality to not understand the *technical* importance of this "hack." There is simply no viable workaround and they should have realized how valuable it was without having to be told, never mind having to break it first. |

It's pretty disconcerting that the developers didn't listen to Strife's repeated warnings that this change would unnecessarily break content. That's the part that gets me.. I understand what they were saying about hack vs feature - you run into this kind of problem whenever the documentation isn't clear. People assume that because something works, it was supposed to work. The developers, going by what they think it should do, change the behavior so it works as they intended but not how users want it to work. Because it's not well-documented, there's bound to be confusion. But when somebody (especially somebody like Strife who, you have to admit, love him or hate him, knows his stuff) speaks up and says "hey, this is gonna really piss people off" the developers should pay attention. They really could have handled that better, IMO. TY for trying, Strife. /me gives Strife a cookie and a slice of pie. |
