I have the freebie Linden-made Corbusier couch, and I'd like to get the texture used on the cushions. I have seen the same texture used by at least one other builder, but it was brown instead of black, and in a higher resolution (this one is only 256x256). Does anyone know where I can get/buy this specific texture, either inworld or on the web, and preferrably in the brown hi-res version? It would be for personal, non-commercial use -- no selling or giving away, just furniture for me -- but I do need full perms so I can get it on my computer and photoshop it to my liking. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

That sofa was made by a Linden (the metal parts were added by someone else), and I've always assumed that that texture isn't available as a texture file.

That specific texture probably is not available as a freebie, or even for sale. But if you check the fabrics section of the major texture shops in-world, many of them do sell texture specifically for making leather furniture. I sell leather in 8 colors, with variations on stitching, upholstery buttons, etc., and I know many others do as well.
Or you could always use that image you posted as a guide for how it is done, and make a new texture from scratch, yourself, in Photoshop.

Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

From: Ceera Murakami That specific texture probably is not available as a freebie, or even for sale. I had always assumed that as well, until I realized the pattern was identical to one on some furniture I bought from a non-Linden. (Ignore the extra bits around the edges, those are other prims.) The pattern of the puckering on the edges is identical... the same source texture was used for both. The brown version is a higher resolution, so the builder is definitely not just reusing pieces of the Linden couch, or even the texture ripped from it. The fact that someone else obtained this texture suggests that it is available somewhere. I don't need it as a freebie... if it is for sale, I wish to obtain a legitimate license for it. From: someone But if you check the fabrics section of the major texture shops in-world, many of them do sell texture specifically for making leather furniture. I sell leather in 8 colors, with variations on stitching, upholstery buttons, etc., and I know many others do as well. I haven't had much luck with that... all the ones I've seen have button puckers, which give a totally different look. From: someone Or you could always use that image you posted as a guide for how it is done, and make a new texture from scratch, yourself, in Photoshop. I was hoping to avoid that as (a) I'm no artist and the results would probably not be satisfactory, and (b) if the texture is available for sale, I wish to support the artist who created it.

From: Ava Glasgow ETA: Just checked, they're not it. Thanks, though. Aw, poo. Well those are the only freebie ones I have seen. They are 256 but I couldn't tell if that was what you wanted or didn't want. (Could you not photoshop the pix you took?)

Another suggestion, real quick: Try joining Free Texture Library group in world. There are some die hard texture collectors in there. One of them either has it or knows where to get it - I'll bet.

From: Melita Magic (Could you not photoshop the pix you took?) It would be possible to do, but probably not legal if the copyright owner does not allow free distribution. (I say "probably" because it's possible my plans qualify for the fair use exception, but I don't think so. At least not for digital content, which is subject to tighter restrictions in the U.S.) From: Melita Magic Another suggestion, real quick: Try joining Free Texture Library group in world. I suspect it's not a free texture, though.

The brown one was probably created by the method that you believe would be illegal, Ava - and you'd probably correct in that belief.

From: Phil Deakins The brown one was probably created byt the method that you believe would be illegal, Ava. That had occurred to me, but the builder is well-known and (I believe) respected, so I'm going on the assumption that they have obtained a legitimate copy. I suppose the obvious answer would be for me to simply ask the furniture builder, but they don't know me and I worry they would think I'm a bad person planning to sell copies of their stuff. They might ban me from their store.

Be open about how you would to use it (resale, personal use, etc.) . Ask them if they know where you can purchase a copy of it. Don't be offended if they decline to help.

That's probably the best way - ask them if the original is available as a texture file, so that you can modify it as they have done. That creator may have got it from someone who did the deed, and might actually believe that it's available as a texture file If you don't want to ask, I'll ask if you like.

OR...
Is the Linden who made the freebie sofa still around? S/he could be asked.
ETA: It was Alberto Linden.

I think you'll find that items created by several Lindens have used this texture, but it's anyone's guess what the original image's IP provenance may be. The symmetry of artifacts in the image suggest that the central 95% got passed through some mechanical "make seamless" process, with the edge beading added separately--they're a very different texture, basically a simple gradient. I quite like it, though. It's somehow evocative of endless hours at a nondescript Admirals Club during tough times for American Airlines. (In fact, I'd bet a trip to Boston Logan with a digital cam and 20 minutes in gimp could produce a passable facsimile.)

I like that freebie sofa, too. The Lindens make some good stuff. I end up using a lot of their freebie textures when I've already bought thousands of L$ worth of shop-sold ones.
Ava, someone told me that if you change 20 percent or more of an image it's legal but I do not know the truth or provenance of that remark and I have not done that myself. You might look into that idea, though.
If it's for personal use (not resale/mass promotions), I'd call it harmless but that's just me.
PS isn't it possible to lift the texture from the item, if the item is full perm? I don't know how, though. I do respect your trying your hardest to ensure any texture is legal.
I'll ask around in the group for you later, since you don't have time to join it til Jan.

Thanks for your help, everybody. I think I'm going to break down and ask the Linden (if he's still in existence) and the other furniture maker. And maybe spend a few hours texture shopping. From: Qie Niangao I'd bet a trip to Boston Logan with a digital cam and 20 minutes in gimp could produce a passable facsimile. Excellent idea, perhaps I'll give that a try.
