Constant spam

If my information is so secure with second life then why do I get bombarded with constant emails from people addressing me by my second life name telling me I'm approved for loans and other such obviously bogus crap? I have never given anyone on second life that email address other then to use it when I signed up. So the only ones who can be spamming me are those who run second life!

If you've ever responded to an offline email with your email account, it's possible that the person added you to their contact list (unless you've erased the outgoing reply with header info before sending) and that person has either been infected with an email virus or allowed some 3rd party website/service access to their contacts.

I have not!
I very rarely use the Yahoo account in question. I recently forgot a password and had it sent to that email account and when I signed on I had a bunch of emails going way back. About a third of them were to Juke which is obviously not my real name. I never made contact with anyone in Second life. So like I said, someone within second life, (who has access to my private data), is either responsible for the constant spam, or passed my info onto someone else who is!

I would also like to add that I found it extremely frustrating that Second life makes you play 20 questions instead of just posting an email address (where it can easily be found) where you can just write them about your concerns.

And the last question you must answer correctly before you are deemed worthy to contact Linden Lab directly: "When traveling at a subsonic speed during the last one hour of hypersleep, which vector of the Romulan nebula will suffer the wrath of the impenetrable quickening? ... Be specific, this is a real question."

I have never received an e-mail addressed to any of my SL names. Surely if LL were passing our info, all of us would?

If a yahoo free email account you are better off looking towards yahoo as to why the spammers always get every account within days of creation. The effect you observed is not isolated to accounts only registered with Second Life.

It was a plausible explanation, not an accusation, settle down and increase your bran intake.

That's only one possibility, and the most unlikely one, imo. You said that it's a Yahoo! address - that's another place that has it. All sort of servers on the internet have it as emails travel from sources to destinations. There are a number of ways how spammers might have got your address and, imo, someone at LL is the least likely culprit.

As others have said, you're using Yahoo mail. That's your first mistake.

If Linden Lab was actually complicit as you're implying, then we would all be getting spammed, and I can absolutely guarantee that I'm not receiving a single piece of e-mail offering unwanted products or services to RockAndRoll or to Yngwie.

Ditch the spamtastic Yahoo and use a real e-mail address, you'd have a lot better results.

I have to agree with the comments about Yahoo mail -- any time I ever set up any kind of yahoo email address, it got spammed constantly.

If you want a throw-away/unique email address for SL, many use Gmail, but I have had lots of luck with SneakEmail.com.
