I am thinking of getting a new lap top computer. I have only one question will its graphic chip run sl? Can any one tell me?
ATI Mobility Radeon X600
it said on the req that it will work with the X800 but will it work with the X600 as well or is there another viewer that it will work with? Can any one tell me please. Thanks in advance for your answers.

It might. just get a low framerate in one of the old schools browsers with everything turned to its lowest settings before it overheats and dies.
If you are getting this laptop to run SL, than no. Do not get one with this chip.

Hi Autumn. You should get the most powerful graphic chip equipped laptop that you can afford that is nvidia only, not ATI. ATI & SL = game ending propblems with some people and at worst, game never starting problems. Here is a list you can use to identify where your graphic chip rates: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

The Radeon X600 is roughly the PCIx version of the AGP-based Mobility 9600/9700. I'm not even entirely sure if the X600 is receiving Catalyst updates anymore.
That said, I have been able to run SL on a laptop equipped with a Radeon Mobility 9700 GPU on medium settings with playable results on Windows Vista (if you consider 10-15 FPS playable); so I'm sure the X600 can handle SL, if barely. However, like Briana said: If you are buying this laptop with the intention of playing SL on it - don't. You can find relatively inexpensive laptops equipped with nVidia GTX 130M or ATI Radeon HD3650 GPUs these days. These can handle SL competently and won't destroy your bank account.

Thanks in advance for your answers. That is the video card my Dell laptop has. Yes it will run SL but you'll need to turn all the sliders down and use the lowest draw distance. Even then you'll be lucky to get 30fps in an empty SIM. So while it will work, it barely works.

The Mobility Radeon X600 (RV 380) is dated June 2004. That chip is OLD! X600 is the very first Mobility chip made for PCI Express.
Do NOT buy something this old for playing SL on.

Laptop + Second Life = Fried Laptop
Those nice, neat compact lil' boxes aint made to handle the heat & stress of running the un-optimized software known as Second Life, unless you shell out the $$$ for a Gaming Laptop.
If you still insist, then I HIGHLY recommend a laptop cooler, or at least lifting the back end of it an inch or so.
Laptop design sucks since they like to put the in-take vents on the bottom usually. Being a guy who repairs & replaces these things, I would LOVE to dearly punch their design team in the face with a brick.

Hi Autumnrose, Yes, it should work ok - although i'd recommend you use an older viewer like the coolSL viewer based on v1.19 (non windlight) - it still has the critical updates, so you can still log in and get to adult areas etc, but far easier on the GPU. http://sldev.free.fr/As for the graphics card, you may find your manufacturer is slow at releasing updates, or may be slow. I've used the Omega (third party) drivers in the past with a mobility 9600 laptop and worked far better that the manufacturers own. You can download them here: http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati.phpGomez

There are still no Radeon drivers for Vista, the latest XP drivers are based on Catalyst 7.12 (current from ATI is 9.9), and the latest nVidia drivers for Vista32 are more than two years old.

I don't disagree with what Tod said at all but if you want to run your laptop cooler, edit the shortcut that runs SL and add -cooperative 20 to the end. Or some other value. It makes SL yield. Yes it will run a bit slower but for a lot of the time, depending on what you're doing, if it's just standing around chatting or at a dance venue etc, it may work well for you. It's a free thing to try, just change the value, lower is less yielding, higher is greater. If it makes your laptop run cooler and you're still happy, it's all good.
