What special meaning does "Nebraska" have in virtual world circles?

It appears to be some kind of virtual world platform, or some such. I might well have read about it but it's slipped my mind if I did.

It's hard to find something like that on Google; there's so many links about Nebraska the state, and links about Second Life from people in Nebraska, or other useless links.

The University of Nebraska has been using SL to teach a manangement information systems class:

http://www.newsnetnebraska.org/test-huskers-win/cojmc/399-second-life-brings-virtual-world-to-students

"DeWester said another challenge is although businesses and universities have begun to experiment with Second Life, people haven't thought of how to harness the full power of 3-D virtual worlds. "When you get a new technology, people keep on trying to use it in old ways," he said.
He cited an example where businesses build a replica of a store in Second Life and staff the store with avatars, just as they would in the real world. "By copying your business into Second Life, you haven't done anything differently," DeWester said."

I made one of those in sl a year ago, and I think it's still not thriving : )

Note to Linden Lab:

Do not @#$^%$& rotate the @(*@*(^!! mini-map, $^$&^$&$& it!

That is all.

no idea about nebraska .... but regarding your sig, i'm not sure if you're talking about this but you can turn off mini-map rotation pref>general tab> just under the away timeout box. it's a pain to have it rotate when you're doing something like sailing.

I know I can turn it off - in the Release viewer, and the Release Candidate, and Cool Viewer, and Cool Viewer with ATI fixes, and Imprudence, and the Nicholaz viewer, and Hippo viewer, and so on and so on, and have to do it again any time updating them requires abandoning the settings xml for the viewer.

I want my preferences stored on the server. Need space for it? Take my about statement space and use that space to store my preferences and send them to the client when I log in, regardless of what viewer I log in. I've been telling SL to not rotate the mini-map for over five years now, and I'm sick of SL not permanently remembering that preference. They can remove my ability to have a wiki user page and store my preferences there. I've got preferences on the new blog system, I don't have to re-enter those preferences every time I change to a different browser. I've got preferences in the wiki system, and those don't have to be re-entered when Firefox updates. SL should handle your preferences the same way those do, instead of having them be stuck in a file residing on the local machine.

The Nebraska reference was in Mo Hax's blog post at http://imohax.com/2009/04/01/opensim-youre-losin-me-punking-is-for-punks about the OpenSim stretched avatar April Fool's joke.

I found Nebraska, it's the code name for LL's standalone, runs behind a firewall grid product in development.
From: someone
Mark Kingdon: Well, the Second Life Grid is our hosted solution and we call the behind-the-firewall solution right now "Nebraska," [that] is the code name or working name. It's not the full product name because we haven't named it yet, but Nebraska is in alpha in the market.

Bruce Springsteen's introspective Woodie Guthrie-alike career nadir.

Pep (That doesn't really help does it? Sorry, but I am off work tomorrow so it's like Friday to me)
