 Toto we're not in kansas any more!!!

Um, actually yes I have a serious inquiry. Lately.....like maybe this past week....I noticed that when I create a round object and adjust it, say flatten it to do a carpet.....it isn't actually round. I see very distinct lines on the edges, so while from a distance it might seem rounded.....on close inspection I seea sort of hexagon'ish edge.

Did I just never notice this before? Do I have a setting screwed up somewhere in my graphics suddenly? Everything else looks and acts fine.....my graphics are on Ultra and the view is otherwise spectacular. but the non-round round objects is kind of weird.

I have nVidia8800...... no issues aside from that pesky driver thing which is easily fixed when I turn off palletized textures........

Other rounded objects I have seem to look nornal....it's only the round things I create, that have this linear edge. Any ideas on this???

I am not at all experienced at building, but if I understood things right, circles are actually many sided polygons to give an aproximation of a circle. Sometimes it is more obvious than others depending on size, zoom level, etc.

Preferences, Graphics, Mesh Detail: Objects slider, set all the way to the right, if it's already all the way to the right, I have no further idea on the subject at the moment.

Normal looking cylinders are always approximated with regular polygons in SL.

Heck if you get right down to it, it can easily be argued that in reality there is no such thing as a round line, and in fact everything is made up of microscopic, teeeeny tiny flat bits =D

Or, y'know..maybe other people don't think about that.

But yeah, meshes are noticeably not round if you look too hard, and if you zoom out and zoom back in too fast (Or a few other things) you can get the next lowest detail setting, which is VERY not round.

LOL Ok I'll double check the mesh....I knew things weren't actually round....but just had never noticed such obvious lines before....

Hehe.....and actually...if you think about it.....most things aren't even solid.....matter is more dead space then it is solid mass. I watch too much of the Science channel too...hehe :p

A glass of wine and a few puffs are known to take the edge off of things; perhaps they would work on your cylinders.

This is why I love these forums; I learned something I didn't know about mesh detail, circles and polygons...and I got a great laugh.

You know, I'd have suggested turning the object rendering slider up at first, too. But after some more thinking, I find that I have been irritated by much the same thing for a few weeks now, even with graphic preferences cranked all the way up. I just wasn't really paying attention to it and writing it off as a temporary glitch (one of many... coughs), but round things are indeed more jagged lately.

Do you run an Nvidia card, too? What viewer?

Actually, in reality, there is no such thing as a straight line.

I am a builder, so I have frequently encountered this phenomenon, particularly with larger (5m+) circles and cylinders. This is common when the object is viewed from larger distances and/or if the graphics settings aren't maxed out.

Milla- instead of using a flattened cylinder, try a tube, then reduce the inner hole to nothing...Tubes (for some really clever and amazing reason that I completely forget right now) read as smoother around the edges, and don't turn into faceted thingos quite as much.

It's probably just due to performance issues in SL recently. Check out this blog post by FJ Linden:
https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/blog/2009/03/04/the-state-of-the-grid

…and I quote "We have traced the performance degradation to something in mid to late December, and have started investigating some of the potential causes."

I just noticed this in SuezanneC's sig,

"Jig and Jumpman
Sitting by a tree
K I S S
I N G

First comes love
Then comes marriage
Then comes Jumpy
With a baby carriage.

A talking baby carriage with bling!"

and thought it worth putting in the main body of a post for posterity . . .

Pie ( . . . and so I wouldn't be the *only* one having to change my pants)
