Sounds like you may have a port issue. You need to find out which ports are used by Second Life, then contact your cable provider and see if they have any of those ports blocked, and if so, unblock them for you.

Can you move around at all when you first log in, Daisey?

If so, it's probably not a port issue..

Make sure SL is a "trusted program" to your firewall.

Is your computer hooked up with a wireless internet thing to the cable modem?

Wireless is notorious for causing problems with SL.

Have you tried powering off your computer and ALL of your network gear - modem, router, whatever - for a few minutes then powering it all back up?

If that doesn't help, plan-B would be to hook your computer up with a cable and see how that works.

It may not help you, but it seemed to help me. Go into your preferences, and network. Look for a checkbox called "custom port" and type in 13001, apply. Log off, and back in.

I use Charter as well and have never had an issue running SL over it. But I am on a sparsely populated line.

If you are connecting using a wireless network in your house, My guess is that is the problem. Hook up to your router with a cable instead of wireless for running SL.

Yay! Glad I could help.

Also, check your bandwidth section, and lower it until your status bars quit going into the red.

/me blinks.

Now I'm all curious why changing the port would help. Does Charter 'manage' the default SL ports?

Don't know why it works...but it does. Did for me. The odd thing was, after awhile, like the next uninstall/reinstall, it lost that checkbox...and worked anyway.

*shrug*

It's like the mysteries of life. I don't question...I just go with the flow.
