http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/125080,sony-microsoft-begin-battle-of-virtual-worlds.aspxok, anybody here seriously concerned about that? because i'm not. there's a lot that you simply can't do with the default input devices that a game console has... and something like SL is one of them. besides... it's only the teen grid that might be in danger

To say nothing of the fact they're both clinging to the model of only allowing content provided by licensed game developers. Not surprising: Sony and (especially) Microsoft are congenitally incapable of grasping the concept of crowdsourcing. Dinosaurs in the making.

Can I have the defeated one's stuff?
Well, while they're battling, they're leaving SL and LL alone.. that's all that matters to me.

Well, while they're battling, they're leaving SL and LL alone.. that's all that matters to me. Not necessarily.. 1) M$ will, without doubt, include their virtual world in future versions of Windows, under the excuse of "fully integrated" of course. It will take several years before they're forced to remove it, at which point it'll take another year before they've actually removed it, at which point it won't matter since everybody will have had it shoved down his or her throat anyway. 2) This won't stop either from attempting to take over Linden Labs to get their hands on the technology used (and to remove another player from the market. Neither will be beneficial to the SL citizens, their freedom of speech, their freedom of artistic expression, their freedom of creativity. The only thing that *might* be beneficial is reduction of clientside lag. I personally don't think that's going to be a good tradeoff for us.

Look, they can offer whatever they want. What they haven't put on the plate is the real user owned/created content and excellent customer service. Until they do that, I'm not budging from Second Life. For all I complain, those are the main things that keep me here and enjoying/cursing at SL/LL.
Sadly, I don't think this will even reduce the number of griefers in SL.

Wow that is scary, and possible as MS dropped a pile for Truespace, which is full feature medium high end 3d authoring program. And is now offering it for free, it has a built in export button to Virtual Earth. They bought an entire company to help facilitate the creation of content for their Virtual Earth project. For me after the experience of SL I think any other virtual world created entirely by corporate developers, and whose inworld vendors are either "the company" or corparate vendors only would seem way too totalitarian for me. The abilities to create and do business in SL are the biggest draws to SL IMO.

I don't seen any of these services making an attempt to even come close to what SL is doing. Each and every one has been merely a chat room with 3D flair. (=_=)
Show me SL's level of content creation. Show me SL's level of resident involvement. Show me SL's economic model. Show me a service that offers the same freedoms, tools, and expressive tools that are seen in SL. Then I will believe there is competition. (=_=)
Home, IMVU, There, Lively, heh... TSO .... Meh. (=_=)
For now... My PS3 continues to gather a layer of (highly visible) dust while it continues to calculate protein folding. (=_=)

Calling Microsoft's integration of avatars into the XBL dashboard a "virtual world" is quite a stretch. That's all about trying to cut into Nintendo's market, not LL's.

Yes I shouldnt worry about those two, SUN are on the back of it with an open source JAVA virtual world server!!!!! At the end of the day I think SL will always be SL, we have our friends and our businesses there, for me personally it would take a lot to move me. (I.e. MONEY) (hint hint..)

And is now offering it for free, it has a built in export button to Virtual Earth. <snipped> I Googled it and was amazed with the capabilities- even if not SL oriented , it sounds as if it would be fun to experiment with... Do you have a link for the Free download? There is a link to download here but it does not say if free... http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts75/Brochure/intro.asp

The USER CREATED content is what makes SL more than just a 3d virtual chat room -- and most of the other copy cats just have not quite picked up on that part of it yet.

If TrueSpace can be combined with a virtual world... Then Sketchup can be combined with Lively... Then maybe... ~just maybe~... I see some competition. (=_=)y

From: Imnotgoing Sideways [...]Sketchup can be combined with Lively... Then maybe... ~just maybe~... I see some competition. (=_=)y I think that's exactly whence it will come. There's a whole army of Google developers who have to find something to do with their 20 percents. And Google has always left the door open for user-generated content in future Lively. But for it to actually happen, there has to be some hint that there could someday be money in it. So heaven forfend that LL should ever show an attractive ROI.

From: Brenda Connolly But it will give the Providers many Quatloos, which is what it is about in the end. 40 quatloos that the newcomers cannot be trained at all.
