I know...never give a newbie a box of sculpty prims let along three boxes. A friend did just that and it was probably the best gift I ever received. Anyway, I don't have to tell you how easy it is to make a sandwich board from either a block, torus, or cilender.

I was looking to make a one piece dress and came up with a barrel dress which with dance pants is great for wearable art and interesting textures. It's not quite a costume and is fun to wear to clubs....but Second Life runs on commerce not art.

All it would take is some enterprising person to put their business name on it. One could even advertise one's own business that way. What is there to stop sandwich boards from being the next big thing and one that would definitely be superior to camping since you could walk around and explore while wearing one?

Well, it's a bit late to be first with this old idea.

I'd rather see sandwich boards than ad farms!

We already had both at once.

Let's not go there.

Most people would get tired of wearing sandwich boards very rapidly, I'd have thought. Publcity T-shirts are a better bet - even I might consider wearing them, if it was to publicise anything to do with meeee! :D

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss this idea completely. A group for whom I scripted played with it a year or so ago, using an elaborate display (kinda like the ones the ad networks use, only moreso), and sent folks out to welcome areas, etc., to capture clicks, distribute notecards, and gather info for microtarget advertising--in theory. We captured a boatload of data, and got some sign-ups, but even the motivated volunteers got tired of it really quickly.

On the other hand, it *could* be a partial replacement for camping, if LL ever has the gumption to finally do away with Traffic. It's not as easy as camping, though, at least not the way we did it, because you couldn't just stand in one place and get any L$s: the script watched where you went, avatar counts in the vicinity, etc.

For that matter, one could just wear an ad tower on one's spine and walk around... or program bots to do that, optimizing for crowds, time spent in situ, etc. But if it's annoying enough, the backlash (and griefing) will be intense--especially for any avatar suspected to be a bot.

Advertising bot avatars are fair game for many people in public areas. In places like OIP they tend to get bumped into the sea. And sometimes they get bumped all the way to Pooley or HIP and then used for target practice.

As for sandwich boards. I've seen a number of people wandering around with a board earning a few lindens by wearing them. I don't mind that at all. They're making an effort to pay their own way. So thats good.

But if anyone does wear a board, or an advertising titler, then don't go anti-idle overnight in a public place and expect to be at the same coordinates when you wake up in the morning.

LOL I thought about this within a month of joining SL. It sounds all good and doable but the fact is (and I've witnessed what happened to another who thought of it before me) most landowners don't like this one bit and will boot and ban your butt in a nano-second of spotting you.

I'm just saying....

Yep, last I remember on sandwich boards was a shoeshop owner who was ejecting and banning avatars who came through wearing sandwich boards advertising hair businesses because they were bad for his business. One German was particularly upset because she hadn't fnnished buying a second set of shoes.

So far I've been using the barrel dress design only for my own art. My game time is limited and it would be far more pleasant for me to walk around advertising something than just sitting in one place for twenty minutes.

I'll stick to my own art unless I can come up with a very cool poster design for the Honey Hut. I've seen some lovely ad-posters. The problem with the barrel dress design is readability and what happens if a character decides to dance.

On a related note: has any one else made "barrel dresses." I'll get a photo of myself in one uploaded some day. I don't think they're as much fun to sell as they are to make. Any ideas here?

Well, if you make them physical and add the right script they make dandy cages. :p

They aren't widespread, but yes, they are around. But almost everything is.

Kind of dry. I would need some mayonnaise and pickles.

It's one of those signs people wear front and back over their shoulders that nearly covers them, usually advertising a sandwich shop so people got paid or given food to walk up and down the main street wearing them to advertise a shops business :)

The best use for sandwich boards is to convert them into a trestle table and make a stall to sell sandwiches from at IWorld!
