I don't know if this is the right place to ask this but here goes. A friend of mine pays tier on some land of his, he has recently given up some of it to reduce the tier however over christmas unknown to him the estate owner has raised the tier without telling anyone first as is now demanding my friend pays the same amount he did before but for less land.

Im not sure what advice I am asking for, but for the last 10 minutes ive been thinking "he cant do that". But im guessing he can.

oh wait, he has just offered to pay for each plot of land my friend has at half the price he payed for it. Hmmmm, i smell rip off.

The sim owner is an evil man and a royal ass and there is absolutely nothing your friend can do about it. The lindens will not get involved in resident disputes.

In the future be sure to have him ask around and base the land he purchases on the reputation of the sim owner. There's lots of great ones out there.

It's right, in the sense that estate owners can do whatever they want. They are not governed by anyone other than their own sense of what's right and what's fair. People do raise tier from time to time. It's hard to break even since the tier to LL is so high...

Yes the estate/sim owner can do that. Even sim owners who have a land covenant may not abide by it. That's unfortunatley the nature of SL and folks feeling like they can "do whatever" they want without being held accountable.

yep he can do that

sadly nothing your friend can do
I would take the half price and split
(if your friend tried to bicker the price with the sim owner, the sim owner can just reclaim the land and not pay your friend anything)

sad yes, true yes, morally right, no

Evil, eh? Can we save that term for when it's really warranted? Like when ad farmers start cutting up your sim?

At the end of the day, he is the estate owner, he owns the land, and so he can do what ever he wants with it. What he is doing is bad business practice, ethically dubious, and most people would have the same reaction as you: 'he can't do that', but the fact is, he can.

I would suggest advising your friend to either purchase land on the main grid, so that he pays tier direct to LL, or if he wishes to rent/own in an estate, look elsewhere and do a little research on the estate owner - there are quite a number of decent landlords/ladies who have been around for a while and built up respectable reputations.

I must apologise if I have started a bitch fest, thats what drinking a bottle of wine while loosing at monopoly will do to a girl. I guess I'm annoyed cos I don't like seeing friends being taken advantage of. I don't think my friend would have been as bother by all this if he had been told beforehand.

He has decided to take the offer and run as far away as he possibly can.

Once again I apologise for shooting my mouth off.

Nothing to apologise for Jenifer; you are understandably upset for your friend, but unfortunately there is little he/she can do about it. I hope your friend finds better luck elsewhere.

Thanks everyone for the words of wisdom and an ear to scream into. He is definitely going to be more careful where he lives from now on, we both are.

Thanks again.

There are various levels of evil. Ad farmers just happen to be at the highest level, being Satan's personal minions and all.

When a person "pays tier" on an estate they really aren't paying tier at all. All they are doing is paying rent to someone other than Linden Lab.
