Flex Skirt Fluttering?

I'm not sure if this is a 'settings' thing or specific to the way the items are made: Some of my skirts/dresses (stuff I've bought or been given) constantly flutter like I'm standing over an updraft. If it is a setting I can change, then what do I turn off? If it is specifically related to the way the skirt was built, for those that I have 'mod' permission on, is it an easy Edit to make it stop doing that?

Thanks,
-Two

new "wind-like" feature... where it looks like your clothes are "flutterin in the wind. if you do a close up on pants you will see it as well.
i must say it freaked me out as well when i first saw it too.

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

If you think it's annoying when you're wearing the skirt.. imagine what the designer must be feeling when trying to texture it ;) Combine it with the hollow prim camera issue and we're talking an 'I wuv me' jacket and a padded cell.

I notice this on those that have both high grav and tension under the flex. This is to keep it from trailing out from behind you like a flag, thus making a more graceful sway when you move. Unfortunately, it seems like it 'jitters' when you aren't moving.

Amazing how this "wind" can make my skirt flutter whether I'm moving or not, but my hair only sways when I actually move. So another SL feature that doesn't seem to quite work in a 'logical' way. And apparently no way to shut it off. :(

hair is made up of a LOT more prims that a skirt (generally). If you give them the physical feature of wind interaction, it will cause more calculatoins every second. A lot more. So you can give flexi hair a wind capability, but normall I believe they dont since it will lag you until you can't move or something... because it would add those calculations to the movement ones...

So.. yeah... wind is only affecting flexis if the creator wanted it to.

So, if the skirt is MOD, does this mean I can somehow turn that 'wind' effect off?

If this is a prim item, and i am guessing it is, the setting will be whatever the creator set them to in the edit window.

Once you make a prim flexable there is a whole list of options that can be adjusted to varry its...ummm..flappability. Things like stiffness, gravity and wind to name a few, all these will affect its movement in world.

If the item is COPY and MODIFY, and you have some experience usung the edit window, you can make a backup and have a play with the settings.

**if you dont have a backup and dont know what your doing, you could unink or alter parts in a way that makes it un-usable**

Yes if you go to the object flex properties tab and set Wind to 0

I have one, made by a well known clothing creator, which quivers and jiggles like it's made of Jell-O even when I'm standing perfectly still. I have NO idea what she was thinking, but I throw it on when I need a giggle.

I have Flex hair, and it shifts in the wind right along with my Kimono. It all depends upon the Attachments you chose, and how much it Blows depends upon the settings the Creator used when making the Attachment.

I have to admit I tend to apply a little bit of wind to my prim skirt designs. It gives them just a touch of movement. Nothing excessive mind you, its a prim skirt not a yacht sail. As I recall I have the wind set at 1.

Since I sell them with modify rights, it is easy enough to turn the effect off if desired.

I know too well having fixed one w/ bad texture offsets for someone else. first thing, turn off flexi lol THEN edit

@Finora
My heart thanks you, because I get annoyed with too much /too little drag.

FYI you can turn off flexi movement in the client debug settings... under rendering... and then just for fun zoom out and and watch the freaky effects that has

I have some of those! There's one designer in particular who seems to *really* favor the wind setting.

Most of them are not too bad, but I have one floor-length gown that all but flaps up and down by itself when I'm standing still. I call it the "Possessed Dress." :-D

Sadly, it's no-mod...

yes, but you have to set it in each and every prim individually. The physical properties can't be changed en masse for some reason.

lol, I checked the jiggly skirt and wind was actually set to 0, so it must be some other setting(s) causing that particular effect.

Maybe an ao has that part moving or theres a script in it causing some slight movement? or the softness is so much that it keeps jiggling too long hwhen you stop, or 0 grav or something.. lotsa things can do it

"lol, I checked the jiggly skirt and wind was actually set to 0, so it must be some other setting(s) causing that particular effect."

It could also be a function of what part of the prim was used for each panel of the skirt. Most skirt panels are made of hollow cylinders. When I was learning to make prim skirts, I was constantly dealing with this "jello" effect and couldn't find anyone who knew the resolution. I finally discovered myself that if the panel was cut from near one of the edges of the cylinder (near 0 or near 1.00) then the jello effect came into play. But if I cut the panel from the opposite side, then it behaved in a much more predictable and realistic way (ie.... start cut at .4 and end at .6, as an example).

Very interesting. I always make cuts at about the 0.25-0.4 start and 0.6-0.8 finish so I have never seen the effect you describe. I will try it out on some prims next time I am building a skirt.

I'll also try it on one of the skirt designs I have that uses hollow rectangular prims to see if the effect also occurs there.

I've found switching the softness from 3 to 2 stops a lot of flicker.
