Is there a WORD for this?

Okay, I've got a few things set up in the shop. I put stuff in prims, set those prims to "For Sale" with "Contents" selected, etc. You buy the contents, they show up as a folder in your inventory. Groovy.

What do you CALL that? If I say "vendor", then people assume you're talking about those complicated scripted things with forward and backward buttons. Somebody called it a "box" but I always think of "boxes" as those things you have to rez on the ground and click Open to get the stuff out of after you've bought it.

So what the heck is it?

I call the ones in my store "vendorboxes". But I don't know if there's a more common term for 'em.

I call mine Vendors as well. However, keep in mind that whatever you name that object that is set to sell is what the new folder for you customer will say.

So, if your sales vendor (assuming single box, not professionally coded multi-item vendors) is named
"CyFishy's Penguin Panties Vendor" when someone buys the item from that vendor it will show up in their inventory as a folder named "CyFishy's Penguin Panties Vendor."

I refer to my sales boxes as vendors, but each one is named individually for the contents as I expect them to land a customer inventory (ie - "Penguin Panties by CyFishy";)

Did CyFishy give you permission to resell her Penguin Panties?? I assume she must have because you are to honest to do it otherwise. :)

I've heard them referred to as "Buy Boxes." Not especially exciting, but accurate, maybe?

Oh, I know the whole thing about the name of the prim becoming the name of the folder. That's not what baffles me.

I was just trying to find out if there was some word for it, so I can explain what I've been doing to other people. "I set up the, uh, thingies that you buy stuff out of that aren't scripted vendors" just takes too long.

"Buy Box" makes the most sense to me, since it is indeed accurate but also differentiates it from the type of box you have to rez and open. I may use that.

And I wasn't originally planning on making Penguin Panties, but I just might do so, now that I think about it . . . ;)

I always refered to them as wall sellers, being I always put them as a flat panel on the wall

that way people did not get confused when I said wall seller as to saying vendor

they can be set to sell contents or sell copy (which means the buyer would get the wall seller and the contents, and you still keep your copy on the wall) but if you set to sell original then yep the buyer gets the whole thing and you do not retain a copy.

so if you are selling stuff that you think the buyer may want to use your ad and box to maybe someday resell, then set it to copy when you set it for sale. (otherwise set to contents) and yes as mentioned, the name of the object, is the name of the folder that appears in the buyers inventory.

If you have a no build store I strongly suggest set to sell contents and please do not make the contents a box with the items in that, as the buyer has no place to rez and unpack (yes I know we can attach, then edit and drag the item to our inventory, but not everyone is aware of that, especially new players)

you really do not want any reason for someone to have to leave your store, and by packing a box, in a box, and in a no rez store, they will most often feel they have to leave to open their package.

I call them 'sale-boxes' in my inventory but I've never called them anything in-world, just left them at my sites for people to buy (or not buy!). The latest one I've done is a freebie bundle in a cylinder prim......a sale barrel???

I've always refered to them as "Box Vendors"... how I always heard it...

of course connotation is the same as those stores you see, with rezzed .5m boxes and a texture on them, and annoying floating text that roatates through walls

I think those are ugly as sin, and says to me "Dont buy this, because if I'm too lazy to make it look decent I'm probably too lazy to make a decent product"

they can be made nice, wall portrait style, even "software box" style... but meh, just a quicky .5m box and dump contents in... no thanks, I'll shop elswhere

Hmm, three years in SL and I don't think I have ever called them anything.

I must have.

But what?

And why?

Since "vendor" is just about the most appropriate word to describe what the objects actually do.. which is to vend a product inside..

"Non-scripted Vendor"?

Some other ideas..

Thingy
Dispenser of Stuff Inside
Cube
Object
Not a Scripted Vendor, but a Vendor Nonetheless
Purveyor of Prims
Marketer of Merchandise
Seller of Stuff
The Special Thing
Little Animal, Creeps About, Not a Rat

I dunno. Not something I've ever given any thought to.

I simply use vendors: sure they ain't all scripted an stuff, but the purpose is exactly the same anyway.

An actually, I tend to also drop the "vendor" from the name when I set up a shop or booth, jes so it makes a nicer folder for those buyin' 'em, and also looks better in my transaction history.

Wow... I've used those, but never worried about what to call them :)

I generally have them set up so that you can buy them and get a box, or click on them and get a folder with the conents. (My shop is entirely a freebie shop nowadays, so it makes things a little bit easier.) Thus, I don't feel so bad calling them boxes, 'cause that's what they are, even if they are scripted ones.

I feel a little better knowing that there doesn't seem to be a well-known, obvious word for it.

"Wall seller" and "buy box" seem to be most consistent with what I've been making. Or maybe "sales prim".

Thanks for the advice. Now, to get started on those Penguin Panties . . .
