Hi Well, my monitor sucks. There, I said it. As a result, now that I have that newest tester version viewer running, I'm walking about in the dark most of the time unless I use the "midday" setting which does horrible things to people's faces. Sunset is bright orange and sunrise and night are pretty much black. My graphics card can be adjusted to crank the display (my monitor settings are already at their max) but that tends to wash things out and then has to be reset when I log off. It doesn't really help with the twilight and night settings anyway.
What other ways can I get more light onto my screen until I can get a new monitor? I noticed that local lighting helps. At The Place That Must Not Be Mentioned, even the nighttime setting works perfectly well so some locations seem to have additional light that is missing elsewhere.
Someone mentioned facelights. Where do I find low-radius ones? Are there other ways of carrying around light without blinding people or adding to lag? Are there some graphics preference settings that I should try (local light is on)?
Any pointers much appreciated.

Do you have a Mystitool? It has a facelight. I don't use it, so I can't say it is any good, but it has been mentioned in the facelight thread.

From: Brann Georgia ...Someone mentioned facelights. Where do I find low-radius ones? .... MystiTool. But don't run out and spend a few hundred L$ until you've tried making your own. 1. Rez a sphere. Reduce it to oh, say about 0.1-0.2m. 2. Apply a transparent texture to it, or use Qie's transparency script. (You might want to wait on this until the last step, to keep from losing it.) 3. Position it about a meter in front of your face. at about eye level. 3. In Features, enable light. Change the color to be very slightly on the reddish side. Enable falloff, and set it to around a meter or two. Set intensity at around .6 - .7. 4. Set world to midnight, and play with the settings until you're happy. 5. Take the finished light back into inventory. Now, wear it on your chin or nose. Use edit to reposition it if needed. Or if all that's too hard, IM me in world and I will send you a copy of my homemade light. [EDIT] Oh yes...and in WindLight, you can adjust your gamma and ambient light intensity and nighttime lighting levels to help compensate for your weak monitor.

I'm thinking of turning my Resident Geek loose on my SL machine and getting him to upgrade EVERYTHING...or at least the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and video card. And it's not really all that creaky. I'm telling him I need it so I can set a longer draw distance for heli flying. /me does double take. You DID check the "custom settings" box, yes?

This is weird, because I have the opposite problem. When I switched to the Windlight browser, everything was all of a sudden way too bright. Anything light-colored near a light source suddenly glowed too bright to see it. I'm getting sort of paranoid now that anything I create might look totally different, depending on who's looking at it.

From: Max Herzog Leave work early You just want me groping around in the dark. Thanks all. Good ideas here. There are so many well-designed sims (and pretty clothes) around that it seems a shame to miss detail because everything is in darkness. It is a bit annoying that SL looks so different, based on your viewer, your computer, your monitor, card, connection, and the price of beans in Boston. Yesterday I wore a skirt prim that suddenly turned into a glaring bright spot in my nether regions when I switched lighting. I hid behind the smoke coming out of Crazod-dragon, so that worked out okay. B.

I have a screenshot somewhere when I had the standard client and Windlight running at the exact same time on the exact same monitor and the differences were HUGE in some places. (O_O) I honestly LIKE the new shaders and find the shadows to be way more natural than the 'natural' flat colors from the old client. I'm too noobie to SL to be addicted to the cartoonish look of facelit avatars in the old client. Too many airbrushed supermodels for me. (>_< The shaders I see in Windlight really do change everything since they at least try to imitate light coming from a certain direction. Full light saturation is now possible. Glow allows light to really look like lights. I like it. The rare times I go back to the old client I'm seriously annoyed by the cartoony flatness of it all. (=_=) Take a look at my forum avatar... Would you put a light on that face? (^_^)

Any pointers much appreciated. I would immediately respond by telling you to go to the place where you change the setting, chose the last one, the manually change the environment one. Once that is open, chose the "advanced sky" option. Now that is open, use the pull down menu, go down the top of the list and pick one of the times at the top. Play with them, find one that works. I normally go with 9am.

(O_O) Heck, that can be true even if one is on the same client. Everyonr can have different monitor settings and different graphic cards, not to mention forcing suh, having local lighting off, etc. Assuming "everyone sees what I see" is always gonna be wrong. Today I got tired of the difference in water color between the 'ocean' and the estate where I live so I used Windlight to change the water color

Mari I lost Windlight for several weeks. I was stuck using the regular viewer. Since it is unmanly to cry, I didn't.

I love Windlight environment options lol

I assume you are using a CRT monitor and not a flat screen. Is there a brightness and contrast setting? (knobs or controls) That may help what you are describing. As to groping in the dark, I think Max might want to do the groping. "CX"
