Hell, you can plug your headphones into the microphone jack and talk into the left speaker, it works lol. _____________________

Well anyway.
If you're going to use it for voice, I would suggest you get a USB stereo headset, and not try to have use a separate mic and have your speakers on, while doing voice. There's lots of reputable brands, but I use Logitech. MorphVox is the state of the art voice morphing software. http://www.screamingbee.com/ _____________________

I've always enjoyed the comfort of a headset personally. Logitech always sells very excellent sounding headsets for not bad prices. If your running at least Windows XP or later, you can use a USB headset, if not, I would find one with the actual jacks. I personally prefer the jacks due to better quality.
Often times all you have to do is plug the headset in and bam, your up and running. Make sure if you have any problems to check your sound properties as sometimes if you have never had a microphone before, the settings could be muted, or off, or in some cases so low without the microphone boost option that you wouldnt be able to be heard in game. Hope it helps. _____________________

I've heard the MorphVox voice changer software in action a couple of times. With careful tweaking, it can sound...well, OK. It's still pretty easy to tell that a person is using a voice changer. They're best for "cartoon" type voices...a chipmunk, or a robot.
An inexpensive USB headset with a boom microphone is your best bet...unless you are using a laptop, which generally has a microphone already built in. Some of the best voice quality I've heard in SL was from people on laptops. _____________________

Im curious why you wish to chang eyour voice. Often it is men playing female AVs in SL and want to use it to try to fool ppl into thinking they are real women _____________________

Logitech is good but for the money I’ve found Plantronics to offer the best in voice quality
I have this one: http://www.frys.com/product/5374898?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG _____________________

Often it is men playing female AVs in SL and want to use it to try to fool ppl into thinking they are real women It could also the other way around. Gender bending is common on the internet. But, then again, it could be that someone just doesn't want anything personally identifable out for the internet public..........there are people like that too, you know. I don't voice (with or without a voice changer) simply because SL is a fantasy thing......and voice makes it a little too real for my liking. If I had an interest in DJing that would be about the only reason I might do voice.........and I would be tempted to use a voice changer. Why, you ask? Simple............in my mind, DJ's are men . |

Do not get any headset with a band that is not adjustable. I have a Plantronics set whose band doesn't go over your head, it goes behind it, and is not adjustable. Falls off constantly.
SL sounds, voice and music are not very demanding from an audio standpoint. Any stereo set will do. |

Any microphone. Hell, you can plug your headphones into the microphone jack and talk into the left speaker, it works lol. Speakers and microphones are essentially the same thing although they're built a bit differently because they're used for different purposes. Speaking into a headphone speaker causes the paper to vibrate, and the paper is connected to a coil of wire, which, when passed over a magnet produces the current. While it does work, it's not particularly efficient. To the OP, any headset will do fine, just be sure to use a headset and not a microphone/speaker setup unless you want to operate in trucker CB mode queuing your mic when you want to speak (either that or annoy the hell out of people you talk to because when they speak, they start hearing themselves coming out of their speakers). It's actually quite difficult to speak when exactly what you just said is feeding back into your head 1 or 2 seconds later. |

Snowball is a really good mic for Mac - it probably works for PC also. It is a stand up mic that looks like the really old fashioned ones, from radio days. But for most things a cheap headset or your built in mic will work fine.
If you are doing machinima or something you need a more broadcast-quality mic and Snowball might help you. _____________________

Reiterating here...
USB is definitely the way to go. Quality wireless can only be found in DECT (Jabra has a new one -- beware older Jabra wireless as they are tinny with drop-outs) or Sennheiser's BW900 (which is bluetooth, but a superior design and use of bluetooth over Plantronics et al). Plantronics seems to be the consumer grade standard. Some people seem to like Logitech. I'm a Sennheiser fan, myself, but the pro grade models are not inexpensive. _____________________
