If I have my button unchecked so certain friends can't see me can they still? I have had a few female friends IM me and knowing I'm online even though they are not checked. Am I doing something wrong as this had made for some sticky situations.

Hello and welcome to the forum Yes, they can see whether you are online from your calling card in their inventory. Also if you are in the same groups as they are. There is no complete invisibility. Hope that helps.

I have had the same thing happen. I unchecked the box so a certain friend or friends couldn't see me online so I could get some stuff done and what do you know, the second I rezzed the IM's came in...........strange

This hasn't been working correctly for awhile. Checking offline will work for those who are online when you do so, but those who log in later will show you online most likely.
In addition, if you are in any groups. Those who are in the same groups can look at the group list and see whether you are online or not.
Unfortunately in SL, the only way to truly be hidden is to have an alt. It's one of my primary complaints.

Do a search for a person (or any other way you need to pull up their prifile) and if they are online it will say so at the top of the profile. That little box only keeps them from getting notified when you log on or off.

Bradley's right. The only way to achieve total privacy is to create an alt account and not tell anyone (or only tell a select few close friends). Then, when you're ready to socialize again, you can just log out and log back in as your main account.

Also, if you IM someone and they are offline you get that "User offline....message will be delivered later....." response. Not seeing that tells you they are online.

Just for the record, there is also an option to check "show online status only to my friends". That way, your status is NOT shown on your profile or your calling card. So, in this case, if you uncheck that certain friend, it should give you a tad more privacy. However, if he IMs you he will not get the "user not online" message after sending, so he can still figure out you are on.

Thanks for the quick answers and welcome. I had a feeling complete privacy wasn't available. ahhh, I didn't want to do the new AV thing but may have to. Don't want to hurt anyones feelings. It would also cut down on multiple AVs if they did allow complete privacy.
