I have a friend that’s done quite well selling her scripted items and she wants to sell her Lindens to purchase an island from LL. Is that possible or even worth it?

Yes, just tell her to sell her Lindens on the Linden Dollar Exchange, and then place her order for an island. The funding for the island purchase will then be deducted directly from her account, from the sold Lindens.

You just made me curious about that myself... So I checked it out. There is a lot of the information about it here:

https://secure-web12.secondlife.com/currency/describe-transaction-fees.php

The information that applies to your friend is found there... Namely:
From: someone
Fees for Selling L$

Sellers of Linden™ dollars pay a fee of 3.5% per transaction. Proceeds will be credited to your US$ account balance.
Using Your US$ Balance to Pay Recurring Premium, Tier, or Island Billing

Any credit on your US$ account balance will automatically be applied to recurring premium, tier, and island fees when they become due.
Using Your US$ Balance to Pay Island Setup Fees

Any credit on your US$ account balance will automatically be applied to initial island fees.
So... From what I see, your SL account can hold both L$ and US$ and you can use your inworld monies to pay for fees without using any "middleman" accounting. (^_^)y

Actually thats exactly what we did when we bought our island. Sold off L$ to get a positive credit high enough to buy an island.
