Hi all, i was wondering if there is anyway to get one of the last names from the old list still? My SL wife was planning on making a new AV and wanted to take my last name, but it is no longer in the list Thx for any help BTW, I thinkn its pretty senseless that people can't change their names here and have to resort to creating a whole new AV and losing all their no transfer items just to do so. And on a side note... wtf kind of last names are cooljoke, kungfu, jetcity? Nice new list.

No way. Sorry. Last names list had been stagnated since January and has just recently been refreshed with a new stock of last names, finally. The old ones were getting waaaay too overused... Linden policy is, once retired, never to be seen again...

Thx Calveen, I did notice dollinger and a couple others still in there, must pick and choose which ones to get rid of. If they are gonna have marriage here i think they need to allow last names to be taken on.

One guy wanted to BUY the accounts/names people were no longer using.
For a couple hundred Linden.
Wonder what happened to that guy?

I'd like to buy the accounts if I could get them as is. Imagine the number of Lindens that are just sitting out there collecting dust in the accounts of people who have given up on SL. It would be like buying the contents of storage units at auction.

Lots of people just use a titler to unofficially change names or announce affiliations. Even in real life couples don't always take eachothers names =)
Don't get me started on hyphenating though. Totally not fair that I took my husbands last name by birth and wound up hyphenated ANYWAYS.

Hi Deep, I think that in the case of marriage, you can petition the Lindens to change your/her name, but it costs like USD 100... a lot for just a name.

Re: buying old accounts, from the TOS:
"You may not transfer your Account to any third party without the prior written consent of Linden Lab; notwithstanding the foregoing, Linden Lab will not unreasonably withhold consent to the transfer of an Account in good standing by operation of valid written will to a single natural person, provided that proper notice and documentation are delivered as requested by Linden Lab. "
So, one could possibly purchase an account from a Tenk who isn't around anymore, but you would have to find them and contact LL to get permission.

I understand there IS provision made by LL that For a payment (I forgot the exact dollar amount but it is in excess of $100.00USD), you CAN have a Custom last name, and i am Not Aware of any restriction stating it Cannot be one of the Past names that is no longer available. Check this option with the Lindens, but be prepared to Pony up the cash.
Angel.

I think the name creating idea was for businesses. I also think that once a name is retired, you can't reintroduce it, even by buying it.

Thanks for all the input I hope someday they take a look at letting people change their last names for marriage purposes without trying to soak em for more cash. Seems like it would be an easy feature to add, and only makes sense.. but then again what do I know.

I don't get why they won't just let people make up their own surname. There's absolutely no technical reason why it can't be done.

It would almost as bad as RL; LL would have to rename every single object, land parcel, inventory item, LL L$/USD account that the name changer owned. I don't know if that would be easy or not...

Turns out there's a KB article.. Search for 'name' and there's a Last Names FAQ... From: Teh FAQ Excerpts Q: Can I create my own last name? The one I want isn't on the list!
A: Unfortunately, not at this time, but we know this is an extremely popular request from Residents, and a plan is still in the works (as of early 2007) to make this available. When it is, the news will be announced on our Official Linden Blog.
In the meantime, last names are retired pretty quickly and new ones are continually added, so keep checking back.
Q: But wait, I've seen some Residents with what looks like custom last names?
A: There are some special circumstances in which we've made rare exceptions: One is for members of academic institutions, so they can be recognized as such while doing activities such as conducting studies in Second Life. We have an Education page with more info if this is applicable to you.
Also, at our discretion, we make allowances for those with a real-world, professional reason to assert their actual identity inworld. For example, Suzanne Vega. If you're interested in this, please Tell Us About Your Business.
I would have sworn that I saw mention of being able to buy a custom last name - initial US$100 then US$100/year sounds familiar - last year when I joined but I don't see it now..
