If you look at the data here http://taterunino.net/statistical%20graphs.html
There is an interesting pattern emerging. The average number of new accounts per day was about 12,000 or so. Then, with the media attention to the Divorce case last week, new accounts tripled for the week end. The interesting thing is that the new accounts is still up a bit since then, at about 18,000 per day. It is too soon to know how permanent this is, but it is fun to watch the graph refresh.

Sure.... People just are so attracted by the hurt and suffering of others. Sad it is.

I would guess the new last names are adding some of the new accounts for the moment too, as people grab alts with new/funny names.

From: Morwen Bunin Sure.... People just are so attracted by the hurt and suffering of others. Sad it is. I don't think it's necessarily that for all. Probably some had never heard of SL at all and the story just piqued their curiosity, including the sex angle for some. LL is really not good at advertising their product to the general public, so any publicty is good publicty for them.

That and I bet there are peopoel out there who, frankly, see it as a place where maybe they can have a virtual tryst. :-/ Mari (whyo was more concerned about membership bumps after certain Sky News pieces!)

Lets hope so... but somehow it leaves a bit of a bad taste when people go explore something new when they read something sad like a RL divorce coursed by it. But maybe that is just me.... When I ask around me about SL, most people have heard about it. Sadly about the sex angle most often. Morwen.

Morwen. There is that aspect as well. That's human nature. We all stop to look at an accident, we can't help it. And also I think some come out of a sense of skepticism, saying, "How bad can that place be? These people are idiots, etc". So they want to see for themselves.

a lot will bleed off that came for simple reasons i think..although i do know a lot that came after the last dig media burst and are still here because they found out there is more to sl than Cyborging.. the ones that don't know sl with probably see it as a sex gathering at first until they get in more and look around.. i'm not sure what the drop rate is now but it used to be around 80% that joined had left within hours or days.. so i guess we'll see hehehe

Sex sells. Scandal sells.
At the recent Mentor meeting, LL praised the mentors for handling the unexpected influx of new residents. They also indicated, indirectly, that they were well aware of what a lot of the newcomers were looking for when they thanked us for "expanding new residents' perception of what's possible in SL beyond a narrow focus" (not an exact quote, but that was the thrust of it).
Not a bad strategy, actually. Get them to come for the sex, and maybe some will stay for the prims.

I made an alt on Friday. She put on a fox AV and a tag that said "Ask" and sat around for a couple of hours at a Linden OI (in fact, she's still there). It was the damnedest thing ... Linden OIs used to be crowded panic zones. This one was quiet, there were perhaps 10 people around at any one time.
In general, it was completely quiet - no chat, no voice. While there were a few alts coming thru (blink in, stand for long enough to receive stuff & LMs, TP out), mostly there appeared to be genuine new residents, but they said NOTHING. There was barely a word in chat, and nothing in voice. I didn't hear a single question asked.
However, three mentors did come through, lol! I struck up a little talk with the 3rd one, and even then, no new residents spoke.
Spoooky! .

Truth is i wonder how many will actually stay with SL. As Ceka said it will be interesting when those figures are released whether the NUE is working and if new customers will stay. We wait with baited breath

Wow I knew SL had a terrible retention rate, but I never realized exactly how bad it was. Peak concurrency grows at a little less than 10,000 per quarter. At best that's an increase of 833 additional active users a week at peak hours or 119 a day. But if 12,000 people are signing up for SL on an AVERAGE day, that means that less than 1 percent of them appear to be sticking around. And bots are propping that statistic up!!!
