But I haven't got the skills to use it. Are there fencing clubs in SL, or someplace else I could find people to practice on? Er....with?

Thank you, clever people!

Search-> Places-> Samurai Island

(you might wind up buying another sword there, though)

I'm sure there are others.

Have fun! :)

Hi

Our Medieval England sim has a wepaons master who will help you to grasp how to use the sword. Others in the RGP group also have instructors who will assist you, so try Ancient Rome, Japan too

You can always IM me and I will take you over there so you can check it out *smiles*

If you want to try a more modern/post apocolypse/fantasy setting try Norsim (just put Norsim in search) they have 19 (with another 4-5 on the way) Sims full of combat enabled area.

Hi Aeble

I'll be inworld in about 2 hours time so I'll check in with you then. There should be a tournament tonight so I can introduce you to the weapons Master and you can take it from there. Glad to be of help. Ava

Hey Ghosty, drop me an IM too and I'll be glad to take you over and introduce you to our weapons master and our king, you'll be made to feel very welcome. Ava

Oh, wow, very happy to have noticed this thread. I've been wanting to get into the same thing myself - I don't know if feudal Japan is where I want to be, but I do want to learn swordplay. :) I'll check these out too.

Swordplay in SL is very different from RL. It's still a matter of developing the right reflexes, and timing...but the motions are so entirely different. Keystrokes and mouse clicks instead of wrist and fingers and legs and arms.

I'm aware of at least three styles of SL swordplay. The Spell Fire system, used mainly by medieval and fantasy roleplayers; the CSi system (Samurai Island) used by oriental martial art fans; and the Fencing game. I haven't tried the last one, but from what I've read about it, it may be the best of the lot in terms of having to think about strategy and tactics, rather than just being fast on the mouse.

There are a lot more, I think at last count there are over 36 different Combat systems being used in SL. and the Animations used really vary from sword to sword, but they are not changed by the Combat system, they are built into the weapon itself.

Most weapon systems seem to use a simple Hold down the left mouse button and hit your arrow keys to swing with the sword fireing off random animations (free ones may have one or two swings built in, more expensive ones up to 2 dozen).

I think the Fencing one is used quite a bit in tournaments in Gorean sims. Except that brings up a whole other topic. ;)

Seriously, whatever system they are using, it is really amazing at how realistic it looks and sounds. One of my friends fences RL and enjoys whatever is used in the Gorean sims.
