I have looked through the forums a bit and am still a little confused about getting music in world. Simply, I have some dance animations at home and want nice slow dance music that I and my dance partner can listen to without bothering the neighbors.

I do understand the concept of the sim owner having a source of music but that is not available. How can I approach getting music into my rented home?

There are a number of different "radios" in second life that make it easy to change the land music stream, however -- they have to match the actual owner of the land, so would have to be deeded to the group.

I'd discuss it with your landlord before doing anything else.

First, if the land is one contiguous block, it needs to be seperated into parcels. Only the land owner and do this. Each parcel has it's own music stream, so once it is seperated out, you will not be bothering the neighbors.

Second, the land owner needs to set the music stream. IF the land is group owned and IF you are a member of that group, you can get a radio, res it on the parcel -- rez it again because you forgot to set the group active :( -- go to edit mode and set share with group then deed to group. If the land is not group owned, the owner can place a radio instead and set it so any one can use it.

It's really much easier than it sounds, but it has to be done by the owner.

We've rented two land parcels on two different mainland sims and at both use/d our Internet Radio (which I LOVE)! We cleared it with the landlords each time and it was not a problem with either as we were on our own separate parcels.

Barring purchasing a radio, you can copy any URL from shoutcast.com into the media setting located from the top blue line on your screen that has all the land settings and just copy/paste the URL. I kept a notecard of my favorite stations and did that til we purchased The Internet Radio which scans by artist, song, genre, keywords, keeps playlists, etc.

The main thing as the others have said is making sure you are living on a separate parcel. Condos or vertical apartments won't work.

Thank you all for your responses. Everything worked well. I have a separate parcel and I can stream music of my choice. Now I just need to find a simple radio to do station selections, although to maintain the time period of my house I just need the script(s). I will put those in a candle or something.

Don't know what timeframe you're looking for. Weedy Herbst makes a 1920's style radio, and it doesn't have the floating text some other radios have.

You can have whatever music you like, regardless of who owns the parcel, or what your land rights are.

It is called switching on the RL radio, or putting on your RL ipod.

See, simple, when you know how.

you dont need a radio or scripts to set an audio stream on your parcel.
you can set one via the 'about land' menu's media tab.

First of all, I owe a big thanks to Andy ?????. He gave me a jukebox. I was in the middle of "entertaining" and thought I could look up the name later after accepting the gift. Thank you, I hope you see this post. Following is what I started to write prior to receiving the gift.

1. Found the scripts and built a radio in a candle holder. It works. Can change channels and commands show up in chat etc.

2. I rent my parcel from a group. I can access (under World.....About Land...Media) the Music URL. I can type in a URL (or copy and paste) and I get a radio station no problem. Sound is restricted to my parcel and everything works fine.

So how do I get the radio and my rented land to work together? I set the candle holder to the land group (Under Edit...General) and also clicked the "share with group" box. It appears I have to deed the object to the group. Time to search the forums. (I must recommend these forums at least once a day to someone)

Also thanks on the Winamp. I now also have iTunes and can pull in stations. Just have to figure out how to pull out a URL from the listings. I'll say one thing for SL, it is always a learning experience.

after ticking the 'share with group' box you must click 'deed to group' (so the radio must be transferable to be deeded).

And you need "deed" permissions given to you by the group owner :D
