Buying Lindens

Hi
I am in the process of buying some Lindens.
As a newbie, I was only able to buy $10 worth of Lindens yesterday.
I understand that they have limits, be that because of 'security' or so that they can hit people up more often for their transaction fee :)

I don't quite understand how these limits work, though.
Today, it still says that I'm at $0 'per 24 hours' and $0 'per 30 days'

Per 30 days? Does this mean I can only buy $10 every 30 days???

On their trading info page, it would seem that my limit ought to be $50, for someone who is between 2 and 13 days old.

What am I not understanding?

I'm desperately in need of more shoes.

When you're new there is use to be 250 dollar 30 day limit.
I am not sure what the daily limit is but its probably not 250.
I think its there for LL's protection but also if you become quickly addicted to shopping
for prims, etc it also great protection for that too.
Last year when I started with this avatar I easily went through 150 in the first week but things might have changed since then.
I suggest you read about the transaction limits or log into the Knowledge Base for more details because truthfully I don't remember.
By the way, Welcome to SL!

Hi Brann, :)

Don't feel bad, the trading limits are rather confusing. I'll try to explain it better. First, here is the link for those who want to check the page themselves:

http://secondlife.com/currency/describe-limits.php

Okay, so look at the "Resident Monthly Limits" table. One column will be highlighted purple, and that is the category you currently fall under. Keep in mind that the "day count" doesn't start until you make your first payment to LL (by going premium or buying a few L$).

Your clock started when you purchased the $10 worth of lindens yesterday, so you should still be in the "0-1 days" category:
- Buy L$: $10
- Sell L$: $0
- Purchase: $25

Tomorrow or the day after, you should find yourself in the "2-13 days" category:
- Buy L$: $50
- Sell L$: $0
- Purchase: $125

Your monthly limit for buying L$ has become $50. Because you've already spent $10, that means you can spend an additional $40.

After two weeks, you'll enter the "14-27 days" category.
- Buy L$: $150
- Sell L$: $300
- Purchase: $250

So at that time, you'll be able to purchase even more L$. If you've already spent your previous $50 limit, you will now be able to purchase an additional $100 of lindens. Also, you will now have the ability to SELL lindens on the Lindex.

After another two weeks (at your 28 day mark), you should be moved to the Level 1 category.
- Buy L$: $2500
- Sell L$: $5000
- Purchase: $2500

As far as I know, you'll stay at Level 1 unless you contact LL and ask to be put into Level 2, Business Owner, Enterprise, or Currency Trader. But for the casual SL user, Level 1 should be more than enough.

Did that help? :)

Thank you :)

I can see how one can become addicted to shopping, but I was hoping to rent a little place somewhere.

Having been asked if I wanted to make babies with someone while I was in the process of trying on a new shirt makes me think seriously about finding a little more private place that I can quickly duck into when I need to be, well, private.

The limits set for buying Lindens don't seem to be sufficient for paying some of these (rather expensive, IMHO) rental fees.
So I guess I'll have to wait a while and avoid the creeps in the meantime :)

Addendum, just FYI:

The "Purchase" limit includes all transactions, like going premium or transferring money to your US$ balance. This sometimes causes problems for people in the "0-1 day" category.

If you transfer money to your balance, THEN try to buy L$, it will fail. This happens because the money transfer (which has a $25 minimum, I think) maxxes out your purchase limit. Buying L$ afterward is considered a totally separate transaction, and is therefore blocked.

Also, if you sign up for a quarterly or annual premium account, that will also max out your purchase limit.

Fortunately in both cases the answer is simply to wait two days until you enter the "2-13 days" category. Once there, your purchase limit is raised and you can spend money again. :)

*************

And even more!

If you desperately need the money now, there are other places you can buy L$... but BE CAREFUL!!! If you purchase them from an "untrusted" source, they might be stolen and LL will probably take them back from you PLUS a 50% penalty. Yeah, that will suck!

To my knowledge, the only trusted sources outside of LL are SL Exchange and Anshe Chung. You'll get a decent deal at SLX, not so much through Anshe.

*********

And finally, what to do if you REALLY want a piece of land, but can't raise the money for a day or two? Try contacting the seller!

Although some people are more concerned with selling fast, others have a sentimental attachment to their land and would like to see it go to someone who will treasure it.

In my case, every time I've asked a seller to hold a parcel for me for 1-2 days, they did it. They do this by cancelling the sale and the setting it for sale only to me, or just cancelling the sale until I had the funds.

Main suggestion: just ask VERY politely. If they respond, accept their answer, and if they respond rudely, just apologize for bothering them and leave it at that.

(I know this last part is a smidge off-topic, but fear of losing the "perfect land" tends to be the reason people get antsy about having to wait a day or two for a limit increase. :) )

LOL! :D

Yep, needing a private place to change is one of the top reasons for getting your first place. In the meantime, I'd suggest you try one of the following:

A place for new residents: There are two organizations that I know of that are dedicated to helping new residents, NCI and The Shelter. I believe both of them have private changing rooms for people to try on their new clothes. If you have trouble finding them inworld, feel free to ask here how to get to them.

Join the Forum Cartel: The Forum Cartel is an inworld group for readers of these forums. They have a nice hangout that includes a changing room up in the sky. Search groups inworld for Forum Cartel, or contact Brenda Connolly for an invite. (The group is also a nice way to meet people inworld if you're new and shy.)

not in the beginning, but once you get past all the initial limits, the final one is more than enough

(and as mentioned, the limits start when you first purchase lindens, so say you are 2 months old, it still only counts as one day, when you first make that purchase)

It doesn't count the age of the avatar, but rather, the age of the time the avatar has been buying lindens (if that makes sense)

The counter doesn't start until you make that first linden purchase.

Sorry for being so repetitive, just too sick to think clearly

If you make an alt, your alt will have a fresh, unadulterated limit....

(too sick to even stay on SL, something about vertigo and the 3d environment throws my balance and such all out of whack, feel like I am falling out of the chair when moving around)
heck even standing still makes me woozy, and building HA right.. not at the moment anyway, hopefully by Monday I will be back to normal

*snuggles down in the blanket* thanks :D

D'oh! :D

Can't believe I forgot that one, because that is exactly what I did when I was new. :)

Do not try going over your buying limit with alts by the way; your account will be zapped (disabled) and it can be troublesome trying to get it back.

Yes, when I was new there simply was too many things to buy and not enough linden to do it. I had a couple alts just for that purpose. ^.^ However that was over a year ago, so I don't know how LL feels about it these days, take gaybot's advice into consideration.
