Will this work for Voice/non-voice?

Hello,

I am not a voicer by nature, but I have come across a situation where I need to use it. I'd prefer to not have it installed on my client at all except when I know I need to voice. If I copy my SL file to a seperate file and update the viewer to voice for only one of them, will I be able to log in using the second copy and have it still be non-voice? So that I don't have to keep installing and uninstalling when I need to log in as voice capable? I know there is a button to disable it in world after it's installed, but I've heard that just having it installed creates performance issues and I really don't want to make SL's already shaky performance any worse.

Thanks
Bree Giffen

Just disable voice on your client and you'll never hear anyone nor be heard. Quite simple. Of course the new viewer has that horrible communicate window so maybe you do want to install a separate version.

I have no issue with the latest Voice client .. except I cannot seem to get voice to work!
I certainly have no issue with pressing Control-P to bring up Preferences and tick the single 'enable voice' button to toggle it on or off as necessary.

Within the next update or two I daresay we shall all be asking ourselves 'what was all the fuss about?' :)

Yes, I mentioned that option and why I didn't want to do it. The communicate window is another reason I don't want to have it installed on a regular basis.

There's no need for 2 separates installations, just install the voice client as usual and add the Nicholaz patches. That way, you'll have voice while still keeping the old non-voice look, plus much more stability. For some reason though, if you only enable voice some of the times, you need to run the voice wizard each time, to remind the client of your hardware device settings.

But would it work? I'm not really looking for other options just want to know if it will work. If, when I run the update, it will only update the one version, then that is what I want. I don't want to toggle it on or off or download nicholaz or backup the old veiwer and reinstall or anything else. I can test it when I get home from work, but I figured I'd see if people more computer savy than myself (which is probably everyone in the world) could tell me if I was wasting my time.

Well, it works on the Mac version. I have both the Voice and Non-voice clients installed on my Mac, and can choose which I launch. I haven't tried having the voice and non-voice clients running at the same time yet, but I've had either one up and running in multi-client mode, back and forth, just fine. I use the old one to do text-intensive work or to run multiple avatars concurrently in higher-lag areas.

I deactivate Voice on the Voice Client, but since Nicholaz only offers his patches for the Windows client, I can't use his viewer. So with the new client I am stuck with the horrible Communicate window. And with slower frame rates...

Unfortunately, the only way to get the bug fixes is to get the Voice client, and kiss the old IM and Chat History and Friends windows goodbye.

Thanks Ceera. I am going to try it that way and see how it goes.

you might have to set up different directories for your settings files?

In case they are different between clients?

I know the folder that contains the Cache also inclues a text file for your settings and some other information.

The most current, and all future versions of the official SL client will include the voice option. So, you'll either continue to run outdated software, or you'll have to rely on patching it with options from the open-source community to keep up with features/bug fixes added to future versions.

There are no longer two up-to-date LL versions of the client.

Use the Nicholaz viewer. It has voice enabled without the Communicate window.

Sorted. End of thread.

I believe - I don't know this for a fact - that if you don't mind adding a username, that in Windows you could add a username, and install different versions of SL for different usernames, and this would prevent them interacting with each other. So one username could have regular, voice enabled client, and one would have a non-voice third party client like the Nikolaz viewer, and there would be no interaction.

Anyone know if this is true?

I personally wouldn't find it worth the bother, I know I'd always be annoyed about having more than one user installed on my machine.

Only possible for Windows users. A lot of us are on Mac or Linux, and can't use Nicholaz' Windows-only patches.

Oh, and confirmed that I lag more on the voice client. I'll stick with the old software with it's bugs and less features that outperforms the new software with shiny shiny until it outperforms the old stuff. Glad I set it up this way because I now have a very easy way to compare the two and can use voice when needed.
