If you drop a piece of clothing, where does it go? Not a prim piece, a appearance editor piece.

It is either lost in your inventory, OR it somehow got dragged into the CONTENT tab of a nearby item. It can't take up space like a prim piece.
It may however be in the wall of your house. You'd have to check the CONTENT tabs of every item it may have been mouse-dragged over.
