Please disregard this thread. It was started by myself to get interest in a competition that I have entered while also trying to raise interest in Augmented Reality through the use of Layar on mobile handsets.
Given the feedback I have received I realise that I was mistaken in my assumption that this would be an interesting topic for SL users.

I wasn't rude. Reading it was a waste of my time and I said so.
Imo, reading it is a waste of anyone's time here. It's bad enough when SL users ask people to vote for them in SL competitions, but non-users asking for votes for non-SL competitions? Complete waste of people's time.

Complete waste of people's time. I can see your point, however you don't have to vote and the site itself (which I am not affiliated with) contains a lot of information and examples of Augmented reality which is the next 'big thing' and is easily compatible with virtual reality/worlds. Of course I'd like people to vote for me - I'm not hiding that fact nor am I pretending to be a SL user...but I also thought that the topic might have been of interest. If I receive any further posts from other users who agree with you then I'll gladly remove the post as it's not my intention to offend anyone or annoy. Regards, DotNetter

You can't go by one person as a representation of the opinions of this forum any more than you can use this forum's collective opinion as representative of SL users as a whole. I'm sure you will find people who are interested in this. I am not familar with augmented reality so I did do a little reading as suggested. I am not interested in the concept at all. RL and SL are two seperate things for me, and I intend to keep them as such. I prefer my RL "unaugmented". I've never been one for the "Next Big Thing" anyway. Good luck with your contest.

Augmented reality is actually a pretty cool endeavor.
Thanx Phil, you know most of us just tune out to the threads that don't interest us. Nooooo Phil can't do that he has to poop on the OP if the subject matter does not fit his taste. ROFL Of course I could be upset with DotNetter for havin' his feelings hurt over Phil's opinion.
DotNetter, if you were asking for votes from us then I'd be poopin' on the OP too, we get way too many people coming in for data on us to use in their science projects.
Repost so the rest of us can argue over whether or not the OP is a valid topic.

Repost so the rest of us can argue over whether or not the OP is a valid topic. Hi there, To save upsetting people in a forum which by my own admission I don't use I won't repost the original links. Personally I think AR is really interesting and I think if I could pick up my iPhone and hold it up and view virtual users stood next to me in a physical location where we could then interact would be truely amazing. When I first tried SL it wasn't modelled on the real world so I admit that it's not an immediate fit but I can see how all of these technolgoies could be combined to create a much larger community. There is lots of information out there on Augmented Reality and Layar is a good place to start as they appear to be leading the way. Google it and have a read as it may be of interest (if not now then at least in terms of the concept and how it may work in the future). I hope this helps and again, apologies to anyone who I have offended in the process. Regards, DotNetter

There's something about this at http://layar.com/vote-for-best-layar-engagement-idea/The "SL/GM/L" mashup appears to have 33 percent of the votes. I don't see any actual mention of SL in the description of that idea. A mobile phone program that showed a view of SL might be interesting; move the phone around and the view changes as if you were looking through a window into the SL virtual world.

From: Rafe Phoenix Nooooo Phil can't do that he has to poop on the OP if the subject matter does not fit his taste. It's nothing to do with my taste. It's everything to do with a non-SL user coming here touting for votes to help him win a non-SL competition. It was a waste of my time reading it because of that.

I know Phil, I'm just giving you a hard time. I'm usually one of the people giving the non-SLers a hard time for bringing their predetermined psych exams to the forums. This might be different because it is tech that; as Suezanne pointed out, has potential applications for it in regards to SL's UI.
DotNetter mentioned the iteraction with other users but it goes further than that. AR could give you a Terminator like HUD telling you all kinds of information about people and places you encounter in your daily routine. You could be tipped off that the woman across the room has Jig's *social habits* so might be a potential buddy for the evening. You might even find out that the guy looking over your GF is a sex offender in another state. The painting on your dentist's wall is 12th century Japanese original by Okisuni Yamanashi....its years in the future but I find it interesting all the same.
The biggest potential down side might be advertisers using it to stream constant spam into your UI.

Yes, this must be the link from OP. From: SecondLife/GoogleMaps/Layar mashup
Using Google maps create a ‘virutal’ world where users on home pc’s can interact with others in the same virutal world. Layar users can then use layar while out in the ‘real’ world to view and intereact with people in the ‘virtual’ world (when using layar, a users current location would be translated and appear in the virtual world).
The basic idea is to allow 2 people to interact in a common environment regardless of whether they are at a location physically or virtually.
Within the virtual world, users can view assets from the real world, images, videos, audio - if they like what they see/hear it can then encourage them to visit the location phisically (it wouldn’t hurt to allow them to save the location and then be able to get directions to it using Layar on their device!
Looks like the idea is to bring more of the RW into SL. I would rather see a layer application that put a sales url on objects when you bring up the layer. That would save a bit of hassle in right click > pie > edit > creator profile > favorites > 3 stores to look through and only the last one has the thing you're looking for.
