Strange thing tonight when I in world, I have Windows Live Mail (like Outlook Express) set to auto download mail at regular intervals. Much to my surprise an e-mail to me appeared in SL chat as if I was saying it, never experienced that before. The really worrying thing was it was seen as being said by me by other sl users!

Have you had this?
Was it a one off fault?
Should I turn Windows Live Mail Off when runing SL?

Advise please
Thanks

This should be a technical impossibility. There "should" be no way for these two processes to interact in that way.
It just doesn't work that way.

But stranger things have happened.
Please, what was the state of Windows Live Mail when this happened? Was it running in the background, open and minimized, etc.

Do you know if it was actively downloading new mail at the time?

Further edits:

Perhaps WLM inputted an open mail into text as if typed by the keyboard while you had your curser in the chat text box?

Thats almost as strange as the strange thing that happened to me yesterday. I was logged in SL, and my daughter was also logged in at the computer next to mine. And all my ambient sounds, interface sounds, typing sounds etc, were coming from her speakers, not mine. As soon as she logged out, my sounds returned to my own speakers.

What color was the in-world email chat?

Thanks for replies
Yes Mail running all time at full screen under SL again full screen.
It looks for new mail at a set regular intervals and downloads if any.
Was a new item appeared straight away.
Appeared in chat behind my name as if I had typed it in, in same colour as normal, and in middle of a conversation I was having.
To others reading it it looked like I had typed it.
Fortunately nothing in e-mail to make sence to them as just a one line acknowlegement of something. To and from not appear only yhe message part.
Ctrl-V, not know what that is, doubt if done.
My Nortons 360 had this item as Junk.
Normally what happens with Norton is it gives a small message on screen saying a Junk item as been received and asking if I want to read. Click and Mail opens. This did not happen as I recall.

Maybe it not happen again but worry is of course ones e-mails being read by a group of people in this case nothing given away. Eg it could have had private things in it, real name etc.

I always wanted to have POP-mail in the SL viewer.
Wow, you actually did it it seems. But this also seems impossible.

There is no logical way for your external mail to appear in game in a chat window.
If it does, then I must try to duplicate your situation.

Could you tell me specs, software, versions of that software, and settings?
I can try to make this happen.

If you Reply to an Instant Message that was forwarded to your email,
your response will come in-world as an IM. So if you had an "alt" account
that sent a IM to your main account, and it went to email, when you Reply
your alt would receive an IM (immediately or when they next logged in).
Is it possible that there were multiple accounts in the scenario, and you
might not even have noticed which ones were involved in the messaging?

It is also possible for objects in Second Life to send and receive email,
and those objects could in turn pipe the messages to you in-world.

However, agents (eg. avatars) do not have a fixed email-address,
so you can't send directly them email from outside, except by replying to
an email'd Instant Message.

You really might wanna send a copy of this question in to LL support too. They are so used to getting the same questions over & over again that they might actually welcome this one, it's interesting & I have no idea how it could happen. I'm thinking it must be something locally on your computer and not a hole in the client itself though.

I usually have Outlook running and retrieving messages while I am in SL (or working or playing in any program). When a new message comes in I hear a "ding" and see a black on cyan message box in the lower right hand part of the screen.

I would not at all be surprised to see a bug that causes the e-mail to appear in a chat window on occasion. This could occur if the e-mail program ran at exactly the right time while the SL viewer chat program is running, so you could see it happen once and never again. That would make it very difficult for a programmer to find the problem.

Although I have done some programming (VBA in Office), I haven't worked with large, complex programs. However, programmer friends I talked to today gave me the information above. Several people have seen similar problems, although those bugs happened using programs other than SL and Outlook. Both programmers commented that it could be almost impossible to find and fix the bug because it would be so hard to duplicate.
