I have noticed from time to time that when I close a IM conversation and reopen, the conversation was never recorded. From what I can tell, you are unable to know whether its logging the conversation or not until the IM box is closed. Its happens maybe once every 100 logins.

everytime i start sl i am checking if the chatlog box is checked. to my surprise sometimes the boxes are'nt checked. so the chat will not be logged. also i regulary see <nickname> is typing.. but the person is not. and after a while. is typing disappears without getting the text.

When you reopen the IM - it will show you the last part of the log (if you have that checked) the entire log is on your computer - you can find the location on the same screen where you checked the boxes to log chat in preferences.

From: Xplorer Cannoli I have noticed from time to time that when I close a IM conversation and reopen, the conversation was never recorded. When I encounted that one it was a display bug rather than a logging bug though. Opening the IM would make it look like the last conversation was never logged while opening the actual chatlog did have it logged.

Just checking on this: are you looking for your IM chat in the main log that's simply called 'chat.txt'? I'm not inworld, and am pretty rushed today, so I've no way of knowing your SL age and whether you'd know this or not, but just in case... When you are next in an IM conversation, take a look at your main Chat window. You'll see that only the other side of the conversation is being logged there: your own responses are not showing in the main chat log. I've no idea why this is; seems a bit silly to me! To find the complete IM chat, look for a file named after the person you were having the IM conversation with. For example, if you were having that IM conversation with me, you would be looking in your main chat log folder for a file called 'Skell Dagger.txt'. Your full IM conversation should be in there. If it's not, then I would assume a bug or glitch. If you need the text of the IM, you could try asking the other person involved if they have the log and could notecard it and send it to you.

I wish this feature defaulted as completely off.
-----------
The current viewer is a mess.
What idiot Linden thought I would want to record everything my friends tell me?
I cant even turn the logging off, the options are greyed out.
The most I can do is shut off the display of the log.
----------
Heck I'd even vote for this feature to be nixed entirely from the viewer.
Chatlogs just lead to drama.

You have to be in-world to change the options. You can't change them when logged off.

To the original poster: The client does not load your entire historical chatlog into the IM window, it only shows the last 40-50 lines or so. Historical chat/IM logs can be HUGE, so this is a memory-and-time saving technique to only load a bit of it. The information's all still there on your hard drive, though.
Here's how to find the logs:
1. In Windows, click Start > Run and type the following in the Open box: %USERPROFILE%
2. Click OK. 3. In the folder that appears, browse to Application Data\SecondLife\[avatar name], where [avatar name] is your SL account name. You will find a text file for every person you ever IMmed with since you enabled chat logging, and a big file named Chat.txt for all open chat.

There's a debug settings for logging chat, LogChat and LogChatIM. Maybe that will work even if your Nicholaz client or whatever has the option greyed out.
If the default is to log chat, then folks that want the logs have them, and folks that don't want the logs can turn the option off and delete the existing logs.
If the default is set to off, then people who want a log of their first time and early days in SL can never have them.
I'd do want all my chat recorded, and I wish like heck that I had a record of the chat from when I first entered SL.
For one thing, I'd like to know for a fact whether that parrot gypped me out of my n00b kiss.
