I have two grand (UK pounds) of grant money to spend on a laptop, and a major consideration is running SL on it. I have been drooling over the Rock Xtreme 770 (probably the 2.5 GHz processored X770-T9300-8800 rather than the 2. and until today thought I'd made up my mind. There are already forum threads on this and they are all very positive. BUT today I started thinking perhaps it may be more convenient workwise (size and battery time) to have a notebook, and have been looking at the Alienware Area51 m15x with the Go 8800 GTX with 2.5 GHz processor. http://www.alienware.co.uk/configurator_pages/area-51_m15x.aspx?Syscode=PC-EU-LT-A51M15X-FC&SubCode=SKU-GAMEDoes anyone here have any experience of running SL on this one? I guess it should be trouble free.. but wanted to check first... Thanks

Sorry about dbl post I just noticed you said Grant money, which implies you are a student of some description - have you considered the other possibility of buying a slightly cheaper laptop and using the change to pay for food and beer for the next few months? *grins* Anyway the 8600m is good enough for me for a year or two See pictures... http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/ProfilePage.aspx?Name=Amy%20Stork

Not a student.. an academic.. it's a teaching grant from the University where I work and has to be used up by the end of the month (end of the financial year) Cheaper laptop is not an option

I'm sure the trustees who provided this grant to further human knowledge will be more than happy to learn that their philanthropy is being put to excellent use...enabling you to play a computer game anywhere you may happen to be.

Look at the Alienware ALX first. ALX is a separate department of Alienware.

Try and get one with a recent generation NVIDIA GPU.
You can then try a justify it by claiming you intended to research running parallel algorithms on the GPU using the CUDA SDK...

This one has an NVidia 8800GTX, which is very good for SL. No experience with this laptop, but on paper, the specs look wonderful for SL. I'd upgrade the RAM to 4GB (at least) though.

Have you considered or are you allowed peripherals? You could get a cheaper laptop and maybe some funky peripherals like the space navigator and a graphics tablet. Both of these would exemplify the capabilities for learning in SL

I guess it should be trouble free.. but wanted to check first... Thanks FORGET THE ALIENWARE: True it has awesome specs and can run hi-end frame rates in graphics-heavy games at the highet quality settings BUT: 1) http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/12/alienware-area-51-m15x-owners-outraged-by-overheating-cracking/2) Alienware, has a well-deserved reputation for having the absolute worst post-purchase customer service/help. Do a simple Google search - you will get the picture. 3) The unusual key pad design has caught a lot of negative comments in the reviews.. Some reviewers have described it as a deal-breaker for them. Check out the new Acer laptop gaming rigs: They have gotten outstanding reviews and I have a good friend who is using one in SL that has been extremely impressed with how it handles SL. ,

Thanks Hok... that was very useful! In my defence the grant in question is for exploring the use of Second Life in education and has already paid for a private sim and two years of tier... I'm not really ripping them off.. honest!
