I got this yesterday and again today... a message saying I've been redmapped and might need to relog. What does it mean?

Very annoyed because I was purchasing things on SLexchange.com and the items was delivered, but I couldn't accept them since I'd been redmapped, and poof goes the L$...

redmapped usually happens when the sim you are in goes down. If you are in it at the time you pretty much freeze up.

I have been red mapping with the new 1.20 client when my wife is in the same sim and she says the sim didnt go down. If you are using the 1.20 viewer you may want to switch back til they fix it.

You will know you are red mapped by looking at the mini map and you will see the area around you red on it.

Redmapping also happens if your connection isn't good and you lose contact with the sim. If you are using wireless, this can happen if your signal isn't very strong.

I was using the Nicholaz viewer. Well, I was on the SLexchange website so I wasn't looking at the map. My bad I guess.

Ah! I suspect that's my problem. I've been getting disconnected very frequently lately. Then again, like I said I was purchasing things on SLexchange and if those transactions went through, my connection should have been okay...

Just because your conncetion to a website remained intact doesn't mean your connection to an SL server (region) did. If you were redmapped, you lost connection with the SL server. You don't need to have lost connection with anything else in order for that to have happened. Each connection is independently established and independently maintained or lost.

In any case, so you know, the term "redmap" comes from the fact that when you lose connection, if your viewer stays running, your on-screen minimap turns red. Usually the viewer will just crash if the conncetion is lost. But sometimes it stays working, and when that happens, your first indicator that something is wrong is that red minimap. At least that's what happens in the LL viewer, anyway. I have no idea whether or not the Nicholaz's viewer does the same thing, since I've never used that one.

A map that's red?

It is when it goes down.

The Nicholaz viewer is the only one that actually gives you an error message when you lose connection to the server, in addition to your minimap turning red. The error starts with the words: "Redmap warning".

The purpose of the warning is to prevent you from standing around trying to IM, move, etc.. when you've actually lost the ability to do so. The warning is necessary because your screen looks fine ... you can cam around, turn in place, type into IM windows, for quite some time before you realize that your screen isn't updating, you can't walk, and no one else is seeing your IMs!

As others said, "Redmap" is what happens when your SL client loses its connection with the server. The most noticable symptom is that the mini-map turns red, and you find that while you can pivot in place and fly your camera around, you can no longer move, build, or affect other in-world content.

I've actually had multiple concurrent sessions running on one single-processor computer, where one client redmapped while the other was still connected and working fine. Go figure...

Ah, I've had that happen to me before, I just didn't realise there was a name for it. I only just started using Nicholaz's viewer, so I didn't get the "redmapped" message before, and thought it was some new borkiness LL had managed to come up with lol.
