Can someone remind me how to tell a Class 5 sim from a Class 4 sim? I remember it was to do with Help, About Second life, and checking a number. Anyone remember?

Edited: Found it. From sim2120 and above: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2006/10/17/looking-forward-to-class-5

While surfing for the answer I found this story, from Sep 2008 saying that LL were planning a migration to Class 6 servers. Anyone got any info on this, current status?

Difficult to guess what Tateru thought she was talking about back then, but the Class 6 servers will be more sims packed onto tighter, Nehalem silicon, as described by FJ in https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/blog/2009/05/14/the-greening-of-second-life.

A little extra flavour for what it's worth:

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Jack_Linden/Office_Hour/2009-05-21

[11:37 SLT] Jack Linden: Equinox, not as such. I expect we may move away from the class model a little. It's something we're discussing because almost everyone is on class 5
[11:39 SLT] Jack Linden: Lim, I didn't say there wouldn't be new hardware, we buy new hardware all the time. I'm just saying that the way we think about it in terms of classes may change

Edit: Oh, also, as far as I know it's impossible to tell the difference between class 4 and class 5. I'm willing to be proved wrong though. There used to be something you could do with hostnames but it's no longer valid.

Yea well telling everyone they will be increasing sim performance by changing CPU bla bla bla .. But in the same breath saying we will put more regions on these hosts.. Way to go. Increase performance but deplete the increased resources by cramming more regions on a shared host..
I dont see it changing in performance if they do that .. Using the green excuse to milk more money out of residents with a fasle sense of (higher performance hosts) is pretty much nonsense if you ask me.

Nope - you're correct. It used to be that you could tell the server class via the hostname but they changed (ie: broke) that some time ago.

If it's a mainland region, it's class 5. For private islands, anything bought _from LL_ since the very end of 2006 is almost definitely a class 5 and anything bought from LL before around November 2006 would be a class 4, unless somebody paid LL to upgrade it.

A techoLinden would be able to figure it out. Ask the concierge or go to the office hour of somebody like Andrew and they should be able to tell you the server host class for a region.

If it's one of your own islands, you can tell by logging in to the secondlife.com website, then selecting Land Portal --> Estate Management --> [click on the name of your estate]. It will list all the sims in your estate and corresponding info, including tier dates and whether it's class 4 or class 5.

When LL had a blowout sale of the final remaining class 4 servers in their inventory back in 2006, demand was large enough that they had to fill some of the later orders with class 5 servers. At the time, looking it up in Estate Management was the only way you could tell whether you'd gotten a class 4 or a class 5.

For as much as Linden Labs charges for a private sim, be it a Class 4, 5, or whatever - I expect to be able to *keep* the server when I'm done!
