I just got an SL-Bot and want to apply some scripting to it. I'm not very familiar with scripting but I need to have the bots walking around greeting people on our WSU island. Can someone help me out?

Why would you want to do that? Avatars that fake interaction are creepy. Been to a club lately? Fake people only convince potential residents that SL is creepy and devoid of real human contact.

Well, I'm actually working for a university. Personally I feel the same way, but they want some bots. We have our mascot which they want to have just walk around sayin 'Go Cougs' with a little dance jig, and another bot that represents our distance learning department to just say some info about WSU. As for clubbin' I don't see of the bots doin' that or campin' and such.

Assuming these infernal machines resist extermination, they must be tamed to do your bidding. I'm supposing that an "SL-Bot" is just another libsecondlife aka libopenmetaverse contraption, in which case someone on IRC (#libomv on EFNet) might know how to script them into submission.

Possibly, if I knew what you were talkin' about. I just mainly do design, this is my first time workin' with bots or scripting for that matter.

You don't particularly need a bot for that. Go look at the RUCE 1 sim. Get a copy of the HUD for the SL Orientation course, wear it, and and walk along the trail to the far side of the river. At one point you'll encounter the Scarlet Knight - the Rutgers University Mascott for the New Brunswick, NJ campus. Talk near him, and he will greet you by name. It isn't a bot at all. Just prims and LSL scripting.
No, he doesn't dance or move about, but he greets people as the Mascott. And he doesn't waste an avatar slot in the sim resources. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

What you are asking about is rather complex... if you are responsible for doing this for your university, I'm assuming you are a software developer. It should be a no brainer for you... go check out libsecondlife and make your own bot... then you can code it to do whatever you want.

Negative, I'm a 3D designer. Do you believe that something this complex would require a software developer?

Most bot runners hold their cards close to their chests.
Check out libsl, you might be able to entice a bounty hunter. |

No... a novice python or C# tinkerer could pull it off if they bummed around the libsecondlife stuff awhile.

If the bot will respond to you as its "master", the chances are it will respond to objects that you own, in which case you could get it to move around by a script in an object, but it does require some LSL programming ability to write the script/system.
I have 2 castle guards that move around the sim on preset routes. They are controlled by an object that is owned by their "master". Having them say things to people they encounter is easy to add. I use the word "master" because I use libSL's test client for them and in that programme bots only take notice of the programme itself or the avatar that they are told is their master. If you can tell the bot to say something and it obeys you, try making a script in a prim to IM the bot, telling it to say something. If it does, you only need some LSL, and some imagination to design the system and make what you want. _____________________

Go check out these guys:
http://www.pikkubot.de/dokuwiki/doku.php It's not free but it may help you with what you want or give you an idea what you want to do. Alternatively go here: http://lib.openmetaverse.org/wiki/Use_libSL_to_login_to_the_SL_grid |
