Have a look at this link which includes a video on how to do it.
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/How_to_open_a_box I found it kinda confusing when I first started as well. Try to remember to right click and "take" or "delete" your box after you've opened them too if you're not on your own land. It would be considered littering otherwise to leave stuff around. Have fun! _____________________

Lately I've purchased several items in boxes and when I open the box and copy the contents I end up with a folder containing, of all things, another box that I have to open to get to the actual item(s)! IIRC, this was from different stores too so it's not just one person doing the packaging that must be a little confused by the process too.

I think sometimes we've become so conditioned to opening boxes in SL we overlook some alternatives.
When I send a gift to someone, I place a script in the box that places the gift/s in a folder in the recipient's inventory with whatever I named it on the Edit screen. This script also deletes the script! Yeaaa! The script also has a place to type "Please Touch Me to Open Gift" that is floating text over the box. So if the person simply clicks the box they get green text that says something like "Look for a folder in your inventory named...(whatever). I LOVE this script. Even cleans up after itself. You would be surprised the number of people who somehow try to open the box the "regular" way instead of clicking it - then can't find the contents and IM me to say..."Did you send an empty box to me?"
