Prims turning phantom randomly

I don't get it. Many of my prims are turning phantom by themselves for no apparent reason. I'm having to manually go around changing them back. Anyone else experiencing this?

I experienced this bug last year, then it seemed to clear up for while - but yep, I'm noticing the same thing again.

Kind of an interesting experience, tootling innocently round your skybox then all of a sudden, you're skydiving!

The only prim that turns phantom on me is my home location teleport spot. For some reason that floor prim eventually turns phatom for no obvious reason

Haven't experienced that bug yet; perhaps you can try editing the objects and setting the lock flag. Do the objects having phantom issues contain scripts? Also, make sure none of your friends have mod rights; could be a practical joker.

Thank you for posting this. I got told by Lotte Linden that this was either my graphics card or packet loss.

I trashed my build and I am starting over.

Try setting everything to phantom then back. Try the build in a sandbox or other sim. Usually if it is just ONE phantom prim then getting LL to reboot the server SHOULD fix it.

I think I've seen this one when TPing around. It's sorta like if you TP (or log in) too close to an object, maybe just a liiiittle inside it, it starts acting phantom until you sit on something.

I asked Andrew & Simon about this at Andrews office hour a while ago but they didn't know about it. A reproducable test case (which I haven't figured out) would be really great...

I can often reproduce this by TPing within the same sim. Such as TPing from the ground up to a building platform. When that happens, there is a high probability that I will fall through the building platform. I haven't checked to see if the viewer is reading the prim as phantom at the time. It certainly doesn't remain phantom. As you said, sitting on something and then standing again makes the floor behave as non-phantom again.

I'm not sure this is the prim going phantom as much as SL physics deciding (incorrectly) where you are with respect to the prim. I've TP'd into areas and been pushed through the floor like this while people already standing on the prim are unaffected. My only lasting fix so far has been to recreate the TP coordinates a metre higher.

I've have had prims unexpectedly go phantom on occasion, and they've always (to my knowledge) stayed phantom until I've replaced them. Sometimes unlinking and drag-copying the prim is enough, more usually I've had to rez a new one from scratch. These are obviously not solutions available to everyone. I can see how someone lacking the correct permissions on the object in question or the build skills could be scuppered (I know how daunting the idea of unlinking a complicated build can be!).

I saw something like this the other day. The SIM owner called in Guy Linden, and they decided to reboot the sim. The problem went away, at least for awhile...

It happens to me. My teleport for my land is in a prim. So I arrive and walk out of the prim. Then everything connected to that prim is phantom for some period of time, only to me though. Other people still find the prims non-phantom (which I found out . . um . . last night I think it was).

This is different. There were two different results in the past for me at least: 1) I arrive and immediately start flying out of the prim and end up outside of it before I have even rezzed. 2) I arrive and get locked into the prim - floating flying, unable to move, or stuck in a small hole next to the prim - stuck between prims.

I've also seen the bug, tho not in about a year, where phantom actually gets set. The times I've seen it had it set on only one prim in a linked object, which is really, really weird. I think the fix was to unlink/relink the whole thing and turn phantom off.

I think the TP problem, when the prim acts phantom but the checkbox doesn't get set, is a lot more common. The best way to get that one fixed is to find a test case that LL can use in a controlled environment (ie, probably not the main grid) to debug what's causing it. There are places that I seem to hit it a lot but still haven't figured out the pattern on how to always make it happen.
