I did my homework and did the right thing when I bought my land in Hartley. My neighbor whom I now know, watched in horror as somone took the 512 that was down in the hole flush against what turned out to be the half finished emporium, but hey she has another owner/resident for a neighbor. There are also some overpriced (ALL RENTALS ARE OVERPRICED compared to a fairly priced 512) but very pretty rentals jammed in like sardines, and I knew from seeing what was sandwiching me in, no ad farms. There are still no ad-farms except for one little ad-wall. The obnoxious ad-tower is well beyond my draw distance but not beyond a nosey little walk, and I love to walk around my neighborhood.
That was how I found three failed builds. The first is a Western town. I remember it. It's gone now to make way for little retail stalls. No one ever used the club which was a nice, novel idea. Then there was the (insert epithet) who had a security orb. I sat on the ground by his pool and built a bench one day that was the beginning of my two garden benches. He's gone and a large real estate company bought the land. The benches which I finished in a better sandbox are both in my garden.
Then we have all the little lots that were either going to be rentals or retail. One day they just vanished. They are in Stepanovych which borders my little corner of Hartley. They are listed on the map as purple which means for auction. Linden Labs has them as not for sale. I don't see any need for a big build for a whole bunch of reasons, but I do have at least one good idea for a project. I also know if I can convince a group of likeminded souls and I to go in on buying this land, it would be a good thing because SL needs more stores and clubs like it needs ten holes in the head.
The only problem besides lacking a like minded group for the project I have in mind is Linden Labs is not auctioning the land or making it available for purchase. At least it is no-rez to keep it from being littered. It's just sad, green, inland Gaeta. Is thee anything I can do to find out when and if this land is coming on the market? I don't have the group. I do have the cash. And my brilliant idea is sure to fail, but anything is worth a try.

If the land is purple, then it has an auction ID, and will eventually appear on the auction page, under http://usd.auctions.secondlife.com/, probably the L$ Land Auctions search there. Usually that takes a couple weeks after the auction ID is assigned, but it varies. I've never found a way to be notified when a specific auction ID hits the page, so one needs to just keep checking the page more or less daily.

At least LL is finally auctioning the assorted parcels. Few months ago abandoned land seemed doomed to live up to its name forever.

Yes, they do get around to auctioning all the Purple parcels.
They just don't want to dump it on the market all at once. From watching the page over the past few months, it's clear that they are making decisions on how much to offer per day, based on in-world traffic and such (for example, in August, a slow month for in-world traffic, less Auction land was offered.)
The parcels are nearly always (from what I can see) put up on the page at least 2 days prior to auction. So you don't necessarily have to look at the page every day. But 'every other day' would be the minimum, really.

I seem to remember a similar situation a while back; the woman who wanted the abandoned/Linden land opened a ticket and/or called LL to ask them to set the parcel to auction. They did very soon afterward and she got the parcel. I can't remember who it was but I do believe that just contacting LL worked for her.

I put in a couple of tickets and LL waited until effing Labor Day weekend to put the land I wanted up for auction and I missed it because I was out having a real life. I have since bought one parcel but the other two are developed and I'm not very happy about that.
