Hi I have had big problems with frequent crashes. I can stay inworld only minutes at the worst. I have had problems with crashes before windlight too, but it gets just worse every day.
I have read threads and reduced my preferences so I run on a minimum, actally using the preferences for battle that is used in combat sims to reduce lag and move more easy. And I don't wear radar, AO and try to think twice on every prim detail I add on. Don't use voice or listen to music. I crash when I'm alone in a sim too. I have reduced my inventory with 3000 items, but I still have a load of clothes and hair.
Now there's another person using this computer too. He has not the same problems with crashes. Of course he crash once in a while, but maybe 1 time when I crash 10. And he wears dewices with scrips and that should cause him to crash...but he don't.
So what if it's a bug in my inventory? Is it possible? And can it cause damage even if i don't wear it on me, just has it in the inventory? Can I request a Linden to search my inventory for possible bugs?
Can a color change HUD do as much damage that it makes me crash? That's new...I bought hair from Analog Dog and their color change HUD.

Hi Marianne, There have been previous cases where a corrupted attachment or HUD in someone´s inventory have caused persistent crashing. I´d advice you to keep the logs and contact LL to see if they can help you. Good luck

Can a color change HUD do as much damage that it makes me crash? That's new...I bought hair from Analog Dog and their color change HUD. I have the Dog's HUD, and it's never caused me to crash. Unless the problem began at the same time you bought it, it's most likely not the culprit. Corrupt gestures can cause a crash. In fact, they've been known to crash the sim you're in, not just you. Try deactivating all of your gestures and see if that helps. Another way to check if it's something about your av...make an alt account. If that doesn't crash, then the problem most likely is something about your original avatar. If both avs crash about the same amount, the problem lies in your computer or your internet connection.

Attachments aren't likely to crash you though I think, if something goes wrong with them they'll crash the sim, not you (well, you will get redmapped/logged out but that's not technically a crash). * Clear cache, log back on, and just let your entire inventory fetch while standing still (type something random in the search box). Shouldn't crash you, but if it does you have an easy repro * Try and pay attention to what you were doing and where you were each time you crash (make a list?), if there's a pattern (ie there used to be a client crash while you were swirling the camera) with either things you're doing, or places you go to, you can narrow it down over time. * Bump on Sioban's suggestion as well , especially if two people are sharing the same puter for SL

Thanks /me smiles
....but I already clear cache before I log in. And when I crash, I clear cache before I log on again. The strange thing is, I don't have so much trouble to log in as many others have. It's that I get logged off so fast that makes me ¤%"*!
And i will try and turn off all gestures. But if it was the gestures, shouldn't the problem start when they were activated? And not months after? I got some free and cheap ones when I was new and activated them, played with them a few weeks and forgot them. But they are still active. Ohhh wait...I have a new pose "Andalucian maid" (no it's not a naughty maid pose). I must deactivate it, or delete it? I don't use the pose much, but it's activated.
Phew...I was happy to hear that the hair HUD from Analog dog shouldn't be a problem. I have 2 of them and 4 hairs.
Yes, we are 2 RL persons who use the computer, and 3 SL avatars. I have one and he has two. And only when I log on, I crash. We have a laptop and a stationary, and the same pattern on both. I crash, he don't.

Also, in my experience and it might just be paranoia. If you move your camera a lot or if you have 'Show Look At' turned on also makes me crash more often.

Damn. I always use the camera controls to sweep around. I have the camera controls to pop up automatically when i log in. Ohhh what crap...I'm going to feel half blind without it. Thanks..I have to turn it off and see what happens. Better half blind than shut down.

Oh NO!
I logged inn, after clearing cache, and turned off camera controls. Then i noticed that my new belt needed adjustment. How to fix it without moving the camera? Well i pulled out a posestand and jumped on it so could see me from front....and crashed.
It's just not funny. I will use the stuff I buy, and edit it and play with it. When I think back, I usually crash in editing stuff, and has moved the camera to see from all angles.
Grrrrm. Ok log in AGAIN....maybe I'll stay in for 30 minutes this time, that would be marwellous.

Just hold down ALT and the left mouse button, and drag your viewpoint hither and yon.

I had this problem a while back. I'm going to risk the verbal abuse and post what resolved it for me. I went to preferences and disabled Open GL Vertex Buffers and I have never had the problem again. I know this does not work for everyone. I have no idea why it worked for me.....just something to try if you have not already.

Hi Marianne,
Do you actually crash? Or is it just that your viewer freezes up, so you restart or reboot?

Hi Marianne. It sounds like something in your avatar's data on your disk has become corrupted, perhaps even something as benign as a portion of your texture cache. Rather than just clearing cache, I would delete it, and reinstall. You can delete only your own avatar's data, but it would be a better test to delete the entire secondlife data directory. C:\Documents and Settings\<your userid>\Application Data\SecondLife Also delete as much as you can out of your Temp directory. then uninstall SL, and reinstall it. If you delete the entire directory, you and whoever shares your computer will have to set their preferences again. But it will get you a clean slate p.s. If your avatar has only 3000 items in inventory, inventory size is not the problem.

What version of SL?
Wired or wireless?
Are you and the other user using SL at the same time?
Perhaps it's a port conflict. There's a switch to add after the secondlife.exe command in the SL shortcut target - I think it's -port and a port number, like -port 13001. I'm sure someone will provide a precise shortcut within a few post.
Have you turned your router and modem completely off?
Have you tried it without any attachments of any sort?
Do you have the same problem regardless of which machine you use?
Have you tried switching cables?
Are you using a filesharing program and have Comcast as a provider?

From: Oryx Tempel Hi Marianne,
Do you actually crash? Or is it just that your viewer freezes up, so you restart or reboot? Hi, i was inworld last night and stayed there with only 2 crashes in 3 hours. That's what i call a good night in SL as this has turned out the last 2 weeks. Of course i don't run anything else thas SL on the pc, to hope it will prevent crash. And I just have to de-learn to use camera controls. It's hard to break a habit. Back to what you ask for: I freeze and then comes the Blue screen, so Windows go down. I honestly don't know if it's a SL problem or a Windows problem, but all kind of help programs and searchs for bugs has been tried out. In some cases only SL shut me down. If I freeze, I just pray that it will solve itself, and a few times it actually does. The time I was frozen then is short, not hanging for several minutes. To what you ask for Suzanne - i will answear only a few things since my lunchbreak is over. it's no differnce if we use both the stationary PC and the laptop the same time, or just one of the machines. My problems is just as bad. We have Wireless, and i will try to run with cable. And my inventory is 8000 items, reduced down from 11 000.

Hi Marianne
Although it will seem a pain, especially if you keep crashing, but I would strongly suggest reducing your inventory - 8000 can be a bit on the heavy side for some. You can box up your items to reduce the inventory count.
This REALLY does help, new avatars, with maybe only 1300 items perform VERY well. If you can get down to 4000 items, you will really notice the difference !

Those are the crashed I experienced a few times a day in the past. A fresh install of XP seemed to solve it for a day or 2, and back were the BOSD's (blue screens). What helped me the most during those times: - clear cache. Not in the client, but on your HD, remove the contents of the SL cache directory. - defrag the disk. SL fragments your disk more then any program does! Since Windlight I havent seen a BOSD anymore, but I really think removing cache files and defragging can help you a lot. Together with an inventory cleanup Succes, Marcel
