What Is With The Granite???

Okay, I've held my tongue this long and maybe this has been hashed to death in other threads, but I REALLY don't get the granite sims thing. I get LL producing a few, but most of the news sims to eventually be released are Granite. This drives me batty. Everyone knows those are the least valuable sims. They know that everyone wants either green, sand, or snow, and yet LL puts out granite like it's going out of style. I've tried for months to wrap my brain around this. I said to myself, maybe they are trying to get rid of baby barrons by giving them poor land to sell and then loose money in repeated crashes. Then I considered, maybe they are trying to drive up high end real estate prices by creating an artificial scarcity. Then I thought maybe they are trying ot ditch the mainland market all together and make people so desperate for GOOD land that they buy private sims at $295 a pop, rather than mainland sims at $195.

Seriously, most LL land decisions make sense when you look at them from the right perspective, but this one has me stumped. What is the motivation behind the granite onslaught?

Maybe they're trying to attract geologists with a thing for igneous rock.....

it's hard it lasts longer than other kind of land types? mud and sand get washed away, it's a really boring job placing land and the Linden who does it thinks Granite is either amusing or cool?

I guess we should just be thankful it isn't Torley Linden's job, imagine pink & green rock?

Edit: hmmmm I guess it could be seaside rock!

Perhaps it's a challenge?

Anyone can build something half decent on a perfectly flat bit of grass or sand... but it takes more skill for people to build something on a non-easy plot.

I'm happy building on slopes, but the texture itself is horrible.

Granite looks good when the light or full bright from all those nice little spinning ads bounce off it?

There's a asset server problem and/or they've lost all the other textures "do'h it's in one of these folders somewhere?"

I guess they could always go to TRU and buy new ones? I've got some nice terrain textures from there.

Then the plan must be for us to use prims and a texture to cover it up ... meaning we need more land to compensate for wasted prims... and more income for LL.

Rumbled.

I hear there is a similar problem in RL. There are places like the Himalayas or the Rocky Mountians or the Andes, that nobody really wants. What is the point in them?

I think the reason LL has been putting out granite is because some people like it. It's perfect for castles or a scifi moonscape type of thing--even though that may not be what its used for initially. It's also less expensive on the secondary market. Don't worry, I think they have paused massive land auctions because of the collapse of prices. I think its important for LL to give people a sense of value for their virtual land. If prices fell too low, people would get used to free or very inexpensive land--then LL couldn't afford to buy all those new servers.

My point is just wait. After awhile they will finish this continent and start a new one that will probably have plenty of green land, sandy beach and perhaps even snow.

Except people were saying this before the most recent continent was started. And before the one before that.

I think this is the latest in bots. The granite bot. This little piece of script mastering goes to all newly created land and turns it to stone. I think it has something to do with mineral rights or something to that effect. Before buying any granite property I would check the deed to see who owns the underlying water, gas, oil or other valuables.

Everyone knows granite is more stable. Who doesn't want a more stable sim? ;)
