On help Island I got to the build page (Edit linked parts). I created a box right clicked it then left clicked edit on the pie chart. I then held down the shift key and dragged out two more boxes. So far so good but when I held down the control key and went to tools, the link selection in the menu was ghosted. I tried holding down the control key then hit the L key but still nothing. I went the knowledge base which in turn sent me to inworld help and then seemed to suggest I vist help Island where I'm experienceing my problem In the first place. One big circle. How do i find help on this confusing issue?

Hi Triple, welcome to SL and to the forums. :)

A couple of thoughts:

1) Do you have all three prims selected? They will have bright yellow lines around the edges to indicate they are selected. (When linked, the lines will turn blue except for the "root" prim, which stays yellow.) Once all three prims are selected, you should be able to link them.

2) Are you using a Mac? If so, I think the keyboard command is cmd-L, not ctrl-L.

triple i highly suggest a visit to 'the ivory tower of prims'.
also check 'events' as nci often have building classes and such.

also note that the three boxes cannot be too far apart. try moving them close together and give it another go.
and 'edit linked parts' has nothing to do with the action of linking objects. untick the box and try to link them.

In going through the fist two BBoard on prims, I saw no mention of how to multi select objects, but went back to the tute and tried shift clicking and that worked. then the link menu item was no longer ghosted I clicked it and it worked. Thanks

one other question though, is there an undo feature to return to the previous state? So far I've seen no mention of one.

Thanks again.

To unlink, just click on the linked object and go to tools and 'unlink'.

To undo a previous change:

1) Close the edit dialog box
2) Right-click the object and select 'Edit' from the pie menu
3) Press <Ctrl-Z > on the keyboard to return to the last state or a number of times to cycle back a number of changes

This technique allows multiple level undo's, even after a log out and re-log in. Try it! Very useful!

also note iirc you cannot link objects while you have edit linked parts checked

another way to select multiple objects:
1. go to 'tools' and ensure that 'select only my items' is enabled.
2. right-click > edit a prim you will want selected.
3. now move the pointer to a corner of the build, then click AND HOLD the left mouse button while dragging a 'bounding box' around the items you wish to link or mass-move, or delete or whatever.
4. when you release the button all the items should be selected (assuming they arent locked). THIS MAY ALSO INCLUDE YOUR WORKSHOP FLOOR or a tree 100m away. be careful what you select (lock your workshop items to avoid having them selected).
5. you can set the root prim by holding shift then unselecting then reselecting that prim.
6. this is also a good way to mass edit flags or set to group on multiple objects.

Also something to note: ( i didn't see it mentioned...forgive me if it already was)

If you alreday have a group of linked objects (like your boxes) and want to unlink just one of them....
Select "edit linked parts" while the "assembly" is selected, then select the part you want to unlink. (it should highlight)
Once you have the part selected, you can "unlink" it from the rest of the group.

Sorry to the OP, not trying to steal your thread, but I just had to say "thanks for this tip". I had no clue that there was a way to undo and Edit and couldn't find any information on that. This is really a helpful hint.
Now back to our regularly schedule thread.....

based on the title the issue is probably:

You can't link prims when the "edit linked parts" button is checked.

This is the way it's set up.

A note on the "undo" feature - I have found that it doesn't ALWAYS work for me, so it is good good good to periodically take a copy of the object. And you can never undo a changed texture!

It's always good to have copies of your work. I don't care how often the Lindens say the prim drift is fixed, it's simply not. And then you have the times when the sim decides to crash on you and you wind up with a previous state and the object is gone from the sim. Not your inventory, but it is from the sim!

This did not work for me. I followed Debbie's directions exactly. Any suggestions or feedback? Has this worked for others?

why is it in some threads the OP is told to use the proper forum, and in other threads they get the help they need, even though it is more fitting to be in a different forum.

(this thread should have been in the building forum, as it does directly relate to building)

If anyone mentioned this, forgive me, only read page one (and skimmed it cuz I already know about building)

Well, Rhaorth, it's because some days we feel like being nicer than others.

The usual reason that this seems not to work, is because you must first close the existing open edit window, before re-opening it and then pressing <Ctrl-Z>, as step one :)

Ok, I did it exactly like that. So I'm at a loss. It would be great to get it working. I can't say how many times I've done something and immediately yelled "No. I didn't mean to do that!" :)
