On average, how many frames per second do you get where you hang out? To find out, go into the view tab and select the Statistics Bar. The bar at the top of the window that opens will say FPS or frames per second. The higher the number the better; I think it allows a max of 45. I open this window all the time to see how the sims are doing. I get around 20-29 when moving around and 30-39 when standing still. This is when lag is down to low or none with a sim containing around 10-20 avatars.

I think it allows a max of 45. I use a laptop, so mine are normally from 7-10, but I get spikes up to 15 during very good days. You say max is 45. Some people in the forums swear they get 100+, how's that possible? |

It depends a lot on what your PC is capable of, the better, faster it is the better the performance.
Also, what other programs you run at the same time ( multitasking ) have an influence. first: empty sim.. nothing and no one. http://www.incony.org/webpics/fps1.jpg second: busy sim, (look at map).... http://www.incony.org/webpics/fps2.jpg I could have shown one of say, a frantic packed dance floor...stuffed with action, scripts etc... the frames per second might drop to 12 or sometimes, but seldom, less.. i dont stay in those places long.. ![]() |

so... can this number directly affect my SL experience, lag-wise? It seems to be related to lag. If the Sim Dialation number is at 0.99 or 1.00...then you should be pretty lag free. However, this number can fluctuate badly when lag is present sometimes going as low as 0.01 (omg). I use the Sim Dialation statistic to tell me if there is lag or lag spikes in the sim and if I need to just go somewhere else. Some people in the forums swear they get 100+, how's that possible? Good question...I have no idea. I just assumed that 45 is the max frame rate allowed (maybe it means 45+) because it was the last number on the scale in my Statistics Window. |

so... can this number directly affect my SL experience, lag-wise? For me, this number is 95-99% of the lag I experience. I have a sadly underpowered computer and video card, so under normal conditions (sim is 45 fps, 1.00 time dilation) my local fps is in the 3-8 range. Avatar movements are ridiculously jerky, as are animated textures on prims. When I fly up to my work platform and turn draw distance all the way down, that number can go up to 25-30 fps... basically my computer can render the scene much faster because there is almost nothing to render. Sometimes I walk around and around just so I can enjoy the smooth movement which normally eludes me. ![]() _____________________

Depending where I'm at, it can be 15 FPS up to 89 FPS. Mostly I get mid-range, 25-46 FPS.

Confusing FPS numbers explained

There are at least two different "Frames per Second" numbers to watch in SL - one is directly controlled by your computer, and one is directly controlled by the sim.
The top number in the Statistics bar indicates the number of frames, or changes to the way SL looks on your screen, that are drawn per second. On a crummy video card, this can be as low as 1 - or lower - depending upon how much has to be drawn, and how much it changes (movement). A fast computer with a good video card can get in excess of 100fps - but it's a rare thing, unless you're talking dual-SLI and a dual-core processor with lots of memory. The lower the number, the more GRAPHICS LAG you will experience - how slow it 'seems'. The second FPS - SIM FPS or Physics FPS, I forget which - is a measure of simulator physics performance. The top-end of this is 45. As long as it stays above about 35, you'll probably be OK. If it gets lower than that, you will start to experience SIMULATOR LAG - how slow things move and update as far as not just you, but everyone in the sim is concerned. A Class-5 sim with a normal (40-avatar) load without too many badly-written scripts should be able to keep well above 40fps - bad scripts, and packing the sim with too many people will cause dramatic drops. |

all depends
using 256 draw on my island i can get around 15-20fps using 96 draw it is between 20-40 depending view and if driving or not using any draw and editing prims to matchup to the 0.001, it can shoot up to 100+ depending the angle view of the island (20-40 with island in view / 100+ with cam angled at ground) |
