I think they should have gone with something more along the lines of this:

well there is an old saying that if you play with something too much you will go blind..
now i don't know if this is something that aims at a specific thing or not but i have noticed a lot of older people do wear glasses.. but this is just theory behind this hand eye combination thing.. i also hear that eating carrots helps slow down this process.. your guess is as good as mine..lol _____________________

It's the cover for a book about playing Perky Pat, I was talking about the story and someone else here in the forums found the cover for "The Three Stigmata's of Palmer Eldtritch" by Phillip K Dick.
It's got the hand and the eye on it, was freaky. The original story if you can find it is called "The days of Perky Pat" written in the 50's and it's basically SL. _____________________

Seriously, this is Linden Labs' take on it: The ancients believed that the protective eye-in-hand symbol brought good luck and good fortune. In Second Life®, the eye observes the vast virtual 3-D world, and the knowing hand shapes it.

I always found the logo quite amusing as its practically the same as the logo for one of the big trade unions SIPTU in Ireland

The original story if you can find it is called "The days of Perky Pat" written in the 50's and it's basically SL. "I'll tell you one thing...we hear that Connie Companion doll is a bit older than Perky Pat. You know--more, um, *mature*." (The Days of Perky Pat, by Philip K. Dick, Amazing Stories, Dec. 1963) [It's a story about post-nuclear war adults who play with Barbie-type dolls who still have all the things they lost - houses, cars, supermarkets. It has nothing to do with computers or virtual reality. I happen to have a copy of that issue of Amazing Stories right here] |

With The days of Perky Pat I see a real analogy to SL. Maybe a slight hint of the I Robot novels too. I haven't read sci fi for 20 odd years, but Perky Pat came flooding back into my mind when I started SL. _____________________

I think if it were an aphorism it might go something like this:
The wisdom we take from our vision we use to guide our hand. I looked over the "eye in hand" info from google searches a couple years ago. It is a pancultural icon in that it seemingly originated in multiple places around the world independently. While it is interpreted variously the common theme seems to be combination of Vision, Wisdom and Action. It seems to be a pretty good symbol as we all play and create in a place of mutual shared imagination. I suspect that if the ancients had shot to create a symbol for this it may have looked a bit different. ![]() _____________________

I still say, it isn't a hand at all...
It's the Southbound end of a Northbound Ostrich, with its head stuck in the sand so it can't hear its Customers. _____________________

In the sense that lots of people "play Barbie" with their avatars (dress them up), and set up house, I agree with you. In the sense of using a game to retreat from the real world, perhaps. In the sense that the kids are out hunting mutant dogs to put food on the table, while the parents are distracted by playing with dolls, not so much. |

I always thought it looked kind of spooky and freaky. All of SL is just an attempt to reduce your brain to a steaming mass of pudding like goo, after which the Linden staff will suck it out with a tentacle. Because they are aliens, and thats how they like it. (personally, it looks like an eye with really long lashes to me, Dolly Parton/Tammy Faye Baker class) |

"The Days of Perky Pat" is available in The Collected Stories Of Philip K. Dick Volume 4: The Minority Report, which is available from the usual booksellers. This volume is from the prime of Dick's story writing; if you're only going to have one volume of the set, this just might be the best. (But why stop at one?) The novel is available separately or as part of a new four-novel omnibus, Philip K. Dick: Four Novels of The 1960s / The Man in the High Castle / The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch / Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? / Ubik. I highly recommend that omnibus if you don't have any of the novels; those are four of PKD's best. Fans will recognize Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? as the book that became the source for Blade Runner; it's very different from the film, and both are wonderful. |

He is great! there's an urban myth about him that the believed he was John the Baptist and that he died of a brain stroke on the night Bladerunner opened. I have a copy of "The days of Perky Pat" inworld if you or anyone would like a copy. I'm tempted to fall back into sci fi a bit I haven't been into it for some 20 odd years now, but yeh. _____________________
